Nothing really happens in Week 1 but we got introduced to this small website builder called “WordPress”. Apparently about 43 websites have been made in this platform so it’s still got its ways to becoming the biggest website development platform.

Resolution

In Year 2 I hope to be competent enough to make a game. I believe I have good ideas, and i practice them by story writing, drawing or reading most days. I don’t believe my bottleneck is my creativity as the uni wants me to believe*. The bottleneck is that I don’t know how to use a game engine. I don’t know how to make a game.
I choose to use Godot. It’s extremely lightweight, therefore fast and portable. It also codes on GDscript, which is very similar to Python which means i still have a chance to keep my hair on my head and avoid a fist-sized hole through my monitor.

A personal goal would be to be generally more practical.
I think a lot. I can think straight, or in circles, or in any other shape but most of the time, I never act.
I hate to confront my confusion and doubt. I hate to start a task with no solid foundation. I yearn for the unrealistic expectation that everything has to make sense at the start. It can’t. If everything made sense, then i haven’t created anything. Then I’m just a printer. I won’t own my ideas.
I am the one to find and connect material to find sense.
I am the one to create; an act which has thought and practice waltz.

Extra

So i understand that “Godot” and “More practical” is quite generic so I’ll be extra here.
In the first sentence, I have hinted on how i will be more practical – I will figure it out as i go. I’ve been thinking about that a lot.
When I follow a tutorial, I pause every half-minute to understand what a little detail means in the full picture… without seeing the full picture first.
Learning Code. In the tutorial, I pause often to think for a long time and learn at snail pace. I would rather progress even though I’m a bit confused. More often than not, it becomes much more clear to me when a section of the video is complete, and i get to assess my progress not in fragments, but in a chunk, and reflect on how that chunk works in detail for deeper understanding.

Another Ode to practicality – It’s closer to the truth. Theory is guesswork and I love guessing what could happen. I can conform to my comfy biases rather than facing what’s real. An very minor example would be me second guessing if i should write this blog in the first place, and my head rings with: “You don’t have enough time!” or “You don’t know how to start!” and I easily submit to these thoughts without testing them.
I’ve been thinking so much, I wouldn’t be surprised that my theories are based on other, unconfirmed theories.
By being practical, I stay grounded.
By being practical, the thoughts I have will be immediately based on concrete reality, not chancy figments.
Times where i have followed this rule i have gained insight that is more specific and more clever. Clever in a sense that i couldn’t have guessed the conclusion myself, but it makes perfect sense. In a sense that only practice can make you achieve those insights. Coding is full of cleverness.
Example: I couldn’t have ever guessed that I would write the conclusion before this paragraph, or if I should make fun of of WordPress at the start. But as i was writing, relevant and fun ideas emerge. And when I stop writing, relevant thoughts reflect on my progress. I love it. It’s so much more flexible to work this way.
I think the only thing I keep to myself is: Am i trying my best? Am i being honest with my thoughts here? And that’s enough.

And with Godot… I need to get over learning basic chunks of code and understand the interference because it’s the bottleneck to my ideas.

Conclusion

Learn Godot and GDscript, as it is the most obvious limitation to conveying my ideas.

Create more by facing doubt and confusion, because it is inevitable.

Footnotes:

* The first few lessons was talking about soft skills and how employers seek your skill to communicate and be part of a team. Sure. But i bet they’ll be assessing that after they’ve read through my CV to see if i had the means to join their company anyway.

Temp Notes:

Add images about how much i think and write about my thoughts

show ross this

Hi I’ll figure out WordPress as i keep using it.
