It is the last two weeks before the hand in, I will be picking up task that I gave up for a while because of time management.
- Full color of Karimah
- Ending illustration + animation
- Mechanics can be added
Before this, I am seeking for Jordan advice one last time to see if we have anything need to be done as well
His advice:
1. The BGM was good, but somehow does not match the sad background story. I told him there are bass included the music to contrast with the melody. He could not hear the bass included in the song. Suggest to add parents arguing noise to the music
2.Minor grammar mistakes in narrative, not a huge problem but it affects player’s impressions towards our game
3.Not much time left till our hand in, a better time management/ work disruption is important for now.
I felt our game was not fully done yet, there are still many elements could be added, but I would prioritize the work that completes the game (Ending illustration and animation) and so I could work on others.
Ending animation
We were planning to have an animated dark scribbles (that represent a jumbled mind), similar to Esi’s second game prototype from semester 1. She wanted to use these for the ending scene. I am making an effect of negative comments and they fade away in the ending as a transition

I came up with an idea of mixing the bubbles in the end and they go away like smoke, Esi was good with that and so I started the draft

Final/ colored version
Ending illustration
In the end of our story, players can choose to confront to the real world or keep staying in Karimah’s parascom. If players choose to confront, they will unlock an ending of Karimah walking to the through her dark room to her door, ready to face the reality.
Esi first suggested me to crop and copy the default illustration of Karimah that I did in semester 1, because she considered that we might not have enough time for a detail illustration. But I thought a good ending illustration was important for the game, it impacts player’s impressions towards our game and cannot be withdrawn, so I decided to draw a new one as fast as possible

I needed to look at references as I am not familiar with drawing legs from the back

it was not good for storytelling so I need to rearrange the place that Karimah should stand.
Also the size was not suitable for unity, it was 2732 x 2048 but it should be changed to 1920 x 1080

Colored version: This illustration was a
dark atmosphere, I wanted to tell her real world is completely opposite with her imaginary world, it was bold, no decoration and sad

Full color of Karimah
I have already had a color plan for Karimah, but I always ended up not completing her as it was not the most important task at those moment, now it the best time to finish the coloring

Timelapse of Karimah and final version of her
More mechanics
I thought only having two origami animals at the back of the environment might look boring for the game, so I decided to design a few more of it. Considering we might not have enough time, I am not going to animate them, I see these as an extra task that I have the ability finish within a limited time

I searched up for animal origami again and I would love to have these rabbits in our crafty world

Draft & final version: I had daisy flowers covered on it’s ears to recreate patterned origami paper, making it look more decorative and also recalling to our nature theme
I have noticed that Esi love using these stitched collage butterfly illustrations for our UI for our earlier process, I thought I need to design one more butterfly for future use, it could be in the UI or keep it for the environment together with the animal origami.

Esi using old butterfly designs as some of the UI before
About the shape of this butterfly, I reference to butterflies decoration that used on cloths. For it’s detail, I referred back to the design I have done for the mountains (handicraft environment), I have stars and hearts sequins, different shapes of tiny glass beads and running stitches as the design/ pattern of this butterfly

Reflection: This is the end of all of sprints, it has been a nice journey for me to teaming up, combining two person’s ideas, building a game together. I have learnt a lot from my teammate and through experience
- Discover my strength and weakness
- Time management, learn to “give up and move on” while running out of time
- Always ask for suggestions from different people, elaborate them, spot the problem and solve them
- Understanding teammate’s situation and be patient, sometimes Esi was not available while I am ready to work, sometime it’s the opposite, but we both understand our needs and take turns to complete tasks
This is not the end of our journey, after this, there will be exhibitions and shows to introduce our game. I cannot wait to showcase our creativity to everyone, and I am also sure that I will keep on adding new stuff to the game even after the hand in, seeking for the best version of my work is the least I could do!
