Introduction: As our game includes sensitive topics which might cause misunderstanding or discomforts towards players.
1. Domestic abuse
What is domestic abuse?
Domestic abuse is a cause of harm happening within a household/ family. According to Women’s Aid, domestic abuse includes
- Physical abuse
- Psychological and/or emotional abuse
- Coercive control
- Financial and economic abuse
- Sexual abuse
- Tech abuse
For our game, we are focusing on the narrative of emotional abuse.
Our narrative: Our protagonist Karimah is an insecure girl, as her family is always arguing. Whenever her parents raise up their voices make her feel scared. To escape from this, she plays with her dolls in her imaginary world. Meanwhile, the argue between her parents will slowly cracks down her world, dragging her off from peace.
Our concerns:
1. Misinformation might be spread: Me and Esi are not from an abusive family, without having first handed information about emotional abusive family, our story will sound less realistic than games with true experiences
2. Might be offensive towards actual domestic abuse victims, like I mentioned, neither our developing team is from an abusive family, some actual victims might feel their trauma is entertained or retraumatized by our game
Our solution:
Include pop up disclaimer/ alert box
When players click on to our start button, a disclaimer box pops up, players will see a short paragraph, letting players think should they continue to play after knowing our idea.
“This game includes abusive content and might cause discomfort discretion is advised, please do not play if you are not comfortable with these content. Our developing team have not experienced abuse, narrative is entirely fictional, if you are under abuse, please do not hesitate to read out for help”
