As he describes them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8216;They have few clear rules or objectives, and seldom include elements that align with traditional notions of &#8220;fun.&#8221; Rather, they are games about slowing down and paying attention, being open to unusual experience, encountering the other, and processing response. I often refer to them as &#8220;notgames&#8221; or &#8220;game poems.&#8221;&#8216;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are ways to explore serious topics through simplistic graphics. Ways to document experiences that are not well explored in the games industry. He also mentioned Bitsy games, which we created in Year 1, like the Crying Game, a game based on the experience of crying and lying in bed. I definitely do want to make more expressive games, whether tiny or large, about unique experiences that people usually find difficult to &#8220;gameify&#8221;, like one of my topics, Hair Braiding. As someone who has a lot of marginalised identities, expressing them through games is a must for my future as a game designer. I think creatives need to be the change they want to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why care about Game poems?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Maybe you want to be a poet whose medium is video games. Poetry is personal, and so can games.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Making games from a poetry lens can help you to be a better game designer.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Poetry can be:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Intimate and personal <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Subtle and complex emotions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Beauty in moments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Slowing down<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-white-color has-pale-pink-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-1\"><strong>Lessons to take away from Game Poems<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>Strip away the inessential<\/em><\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some games have too much &#8220;bloat&#8221; in them; taking that away gives us a better idea of what we want to do.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Leverage poetic devices<\/em><\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rhythm, Rhyme, Line breaks, Symbolism<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We can use these techniques to draw attention to certain moments and reflect on them<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Breath of the Wild Case study<\/strong>: beautiful scenery creates a &#8220;line break&#8221; where you can stop and breathe, and eventually move on, like a poem.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gris Case study<\/strong>: symbolism around colour, the colour changes reflect the change in emotion of the character.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Embrace Ambiguity<\/em><\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&#8220;A true haiku is a pebble thrown into the pool of the listener&#8217;s mind.&#8221; &#8211; Alan Watts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The players don&#8217;t need to have a conclusive ending &#8211; the meaning of the game can be up for interpretation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Reimagine &#8220;fun gameplay&#8221;<\/em><\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Poetry is very playful, but not in a traditionally &#8220;video game&#8221; sense.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It&#8217;s finding the cheekiness in the rhythm, ambiguity, and the mundane.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Balanced fun is the assumed design goal, but not all games are like this.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>Monopoly Case Study<\/em><\/strong>: Monopoly was originally called &#8220;The Landlord&#8217;s Game&#8221;, and it was meant to critique Capitalism, but it turned into the opposite of that.
