Teamwork and Workflow

A very important aspect of Game Design is how you work as a team, Paula and I decided to implement a few key softwares to increase our efficiency.

Miro

What is it?
Google describes it as an online visual collaboration platform, often called an “innovation workspace,” that provides an infinite digital whiteboard for teams to brainstorm, design, plan, and work together in real-time, regardless of location, using features like digital sticky notes, mind mapping, templates, and AI assistance for ideation and summarizing. Essentially, it’s an online white board:

We’ve been using it to keep track of:

  • Mood boards of certain ideas (Whether they be mechanics, art, narrative based etc.)
  • Mechanics, Narratives, Aesthetic ideas etc.
  • Links to useful resources (YouTube tutorials, Example Design Proposal websites etc.)
  • Planning out pipelines and workflows
    • For me, looking into Unity specific things like tile maps, the animator etc.

Trello

What is it?
Trello is a visual work management tool that helps individuals and teams organize tasks and projects using a flexible, Kanban-style system of boards, lists, and cards, allowing users to track progress from ideation to completion through a simple drag-and-drop interface

At first, Paula and I wanted to use JIRA – But after talking to guest speaker Jade Carter we decided on Trello for a few reasons:

  • JIRA mostly uses Scrum/ Waterfall workflows (Working in time-sensitive sprints)
    • Which is useful when managing much larger teams – not so applicable in a two person team
  • Trello utilizes a Kanban-workflow – which is less restrictive and allows for more freedom with the completion of tasks
    • Helpful on a two person team where some tasks might not be solely done by a specific person
  • Jade Carter, an in-industry producer, decided against using JIRA as its learning curve is much higher than using Trello

Gantt Chart

I also created a Gantt Chart for when semester 2 starts (26th of Jan):

The blue sections are mostly work for E-Jay, and the pink ones are work that Paula has to complete. Whereas the green sections at the end of each ‘stage’ is a week left for contingencies, in case anything goes wrong and we cant complete our work on time.
