{"id":414,"date":"2026-01-10T19:37:38","date_gmt":"2026-01-10T19:37:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.wsagames.com\/et4g23-yr3\/?p=414"},"modified":"2026-01-11T20:01:46","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T20:01:46","slug":"polynesian-culture-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.wsagames.com\/et4g23-yr3\/2026\/01\/10\/polynesian-culture-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Polynesian Culture Research"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>To justify the &#8216;magical&#8217; movement abilities of the player character, I want to research one of Polynesian mythology&#8217;s most well-known characters\/stories Maui, and use what I learn as a basis from the player character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"The Messed Up Origins of Maui | Disney Explained - Jon Solo\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wgcaYAQo_qU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This video talks about a lot of things, but there are some things I want to specifically mention here<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Differences in belief<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There are hundred of islands in Polynesia\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All of these islands have different beliefs about the story of Maui<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The beliefs of the Hawaiian and Maori are the most well-known, so those will be the ones that I will look into the most<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Maui&#8217;s &#8216;backstory&#8217;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Maui was often seen as a trickster that often used his powers for mischief that would somehow always seem to benefit humanity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maui was born from a human mother, and his father was a guardian of the underworld &#8211; making him a demi-god<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maui was saved as a baby by the ocean spirit, who wrapped him up in seaweed and and taken care of by sea creatures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maui was given a magical fish hook by the gods, in Maori tradition, it is made from the jaw bone of his godly ancestor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Maui&#8217;s adventures<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Maui is known for his great deeds and adventures:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pulled islands up from the ocean<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stole fire to keep humans warm and safe against predators<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pulled up the sky so humans could walk around freely<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Harnessed the breeze so humans could travel on water<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lassoed the sun to gave us longer days<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But there are also more specific stories as well:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In Hawaiian tradition, it is believed Maui captured a fire-making bird and forced it to teach him to make fire<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In Maori tradition, Maui sought the goddess of fire &#8211; Mahuika &#8211; to learn how fire was made. But ended up infuriating her, causing her to try to kill him. To escape, we shapo-shifted into a bird and prayed for the weather Gods to make it rain on her. As a last ditch effort, she hurled a fireball at him and lit some trees on fire &#8211; which Maui used the burnt branches to teach humans how to rub sticks together to make fire<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maui also spoke to a priest who was the keeper of the winds and tells him to release them, and then shows humans how to use the winds responsibly<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In Maori tradition, Maui and his brothers travelled east (To where the sun rested) to restrain the sun and beat him with his magical fish hook until he agreed to travel across the sky slower<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In Hawaiian tradition, Maui used his fish hook to lasso the sun while it was in the sky<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How will this effect the player character?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The player characters abilities and the loss of them can be attributed to these stories. But without the use of modern day technology, how was this possible?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ancient Polynesian navigators, often called <em><strong>wayfinders <\/strong><\/em>relied on deep knowledge of the night sky:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Star Paths<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They memorised the rising and setting positions of stars and constellations on the horizon. Each star\u2019s position corresponded to a direction or bearing across the ocean.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Star Compass<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This mental system, often called a <strong>star compass<\/strong>, divided the sky into \u201chouses\u201d or directional points based on where stars appeared. Navigators could maintain a course at night by tracking which star was rising or setting where.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Specific Stars<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Certain well-known stars and constellations \u2014 such as the Southern Cross, Orion\u2019s Belt, or other bright stars \u2014 acted as key reference points for directions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Latitude Awareness<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>By noting how high a star appeared above the horizon, wayfinders could estimate latitude and stay on a course that would bring them to the latitude of their target island.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All of this knowledge was passed on via word of mouth, whether it be stories, chants or song. on the night sky using UI elements to help them decide where on the horizon they should go\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As wayfinders used constellations to draw lines to decide what direction was where<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add &#8216;stickers&#8217; or &#8216;notches&#8217; to the night sky &#8211; like the map in Hollow Knight &#8211; to help the player keep track of certain directions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Players could hear songs, chants or stories from NPCs that could help them solve astronavigation puzzles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Night sky time system\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Players could move forward or backward in time to see how certain stars move<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>(Time travel is not accurate to Polynesian culture or mythology, this is simply for the sake of the star gazing puzzle)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Contemporary Issues in Games<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To ensure the research I&#8217;ve done here is used effectively and properly, I&#8217;ve looked into other games that have taken similar contexts and applied them to their own:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-e-jay-tripoli wp-block-embed-e-jay-tripoli\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"7JuGqYjor8\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.wsagames.com\/et4g23-yr3\/2026\/01\/11\/contemporary-issues-in-games\/\">Contemporary Issues in Games<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute;
