With this new, empty scene I created four <strong>Buttons <\/strong>in the scenes hierarchy (called: &#8216;Start&#8217;, &#8216;Credits&#8217;, &#8216;Options&#8217; and &#8216;Exit&#8217;). This created a &#8216;Canvas&#8217; gameobject and automatically made these buttons children to it; this &#8216;Canvas&#8217; gameobject acts as a renderer for all UI gameobjects within Unity. Within the &#8216;Canvas&#8217; gameobject, I changed some values in the &#8216;Canvas Scaler&#8217; component. Notably UI Scale Mode and Reference Resolution, these change would ensure that no matter what system opened the game, its UI would always scale accordingly to the size of a 16:9 aspect ratio screen &#8211; which is the most common aspect ratio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"205\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.wsagames.com\/et4g23\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2025\/03\/image-16-1024x205.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-942\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.wsagames.com\/et4g23\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2025\/03\/image-16-1024x205.png 1024w, https:\/\/sites.wsagames.com\/et4g23\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2025\/03\/image-16-300x60.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.wsagames.com\/et4g23\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2025\/03\/image-16-768x153.png 768w, https:\/\/sites.wsagames.com\/et4g23\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2025\/03\/image-16-850x170.png 850w, https:\/\/sites.wsagames.com\/et4g23\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2025\/03\/image-16.png 1486w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Creating functional buttons<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to make these buttons functional, they must call a script when they are activated (clicked on). Therefore I created a &#8216;MainMenu&#8217; script and applied it onto the scenes &#8216;Main Camera&#8217; &#8211; as this gameobject would always be present within the scene. For now, only the &#8216;Start&#8217; and &#8216;Exit&#8217; buttons needed to work for the playtest and, later in development, I would come back and add functionality to the &#8216;Credits&#8217; and &#8216;Options&#8217; buttons. Luckily for me, the &#8216;Start&#8217; and &#8216;Exit&#8217; buttons are extremely easy to code. For both of these buttons, I accessed the &#8216;Button&#8217; component in the inspector and assigned both of them the appropriate method in the OnClick( ) drop down. However, the process for the hover images was slightly different &#8211; in the Button component for the buttons, I changed the &#8216;Transition&#8217; variable from &#8216;Animation&#8217; to &#8216;Sprite Swap&#8217;. This would allow me to alter the sprite for &#8216;Highlighted Sprite&#8217; to the hover version of the button sprite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img
