Final Reflection
Through Ash was developed as a narrative-driven experience with a strong emphasis on atmosphere, visual identity, and player immersion. The final outcome successfully delivers a cohesive and emotionally driven experience, particularly through its visual style, technical art, and environmental design.
Project Outcome
The project achieved its core goal of creating a short, focused experience that relies on atmosphere and environmental storytelling rather than traditional gameplay systems. The combination of stylised visuals, controlled lighting, and post-processing allowed the game to present a consistent and recognisable identity.
Cinematic elements and audio design further supported this, helping to establish tone and guide player interpretation without relying heavily on explicit narrative.
What Worked Well
The strongest aspect of the project was the integration of 3D art and technical art. The combination of realistic textures with toon shading and post-processing created a distinctive visual style that remained consistent throughout the game.
Technical systems such as shaders, particle effects, and spatial audio significantly enhanced immersion, allowing the environment to feel more dynamic and responsive.
Collaboration was also a key strength. Working alongside a programmer allowed for a clear division of roles, enabling a focused workflow while still supporting the integration of systems and visuals.
Challenges
One of the main challenges was balancing technical implementation with artistic intent. Integrating visual systems such as shaders, post-processing, and audio required careful adjustment to avoid overwhelming the player or reducing clarity.
Audio balancing was a particular challenge during development, with earlier builds lacking consistency across different sound elements. This required multiple iterations to achieve a cohesive result.
Another challenge was maintaining scope. Initial ideas risked becoming too ambitious, and it was necessary to refine and prioritise features to ensure the project could be completed to a high standard within the available timeframe.
Improvements
While the current build is functional and polished, there are several areas that could be further developed.
Interaction systems could be expanded to allow greater engagement with the environment, particularly through additional prop interactions. The event system could also be refined to improve pacing and provide clearer feedback to the player.
Environmental storytelling could be developed further through additional detail and interactive elements, strengthening the narrative without relying on direct exposition.
Personal Development
This project significantly developed my skills as both a 3D artist and a technical artist. I gained experience not only in asset creation and texturing, but also in implementing systems within the engine, including shaders, post-processing, UI, and audio.
Working in a collaborative environment improved my understanding of how different roles interact within game development, particularly the relationship between art and programming.
Additionally, the project strengthened my ability to evaluate my own work, respond to feedback, and refine systems based on testing. This has improved my confidence in approaching both creative and technical challenges.
Conclusion
Overall, Through Ash represents a successful combination of visual design and technical implementation. While there are areas for further refinement, the project demonstrates a strong understanding of both artistic and technical processes, as well as the ability to develop, evaluate, and present a complete game experience.
