What the presentation covered:

My presentation showcased my 4 themes that I selected after my phase 1 brainstorming.

  • Texture: Looked at how texture evokes sensation and emotion in art, covering physical, visual, invented, and abstract texture with a visual experiment.
  • Coffee: Conducted historical research from its origins in Ethiopia through the Ottoman empire to modern day coffee culture.
  • Discipline: I investigated why staying disciplined is harder in today’s age of digital distractions.
  • Sports: Looked into the role sports have in men’s mental health, focusing on physical activity and social connection

For each theme I utilised a different research method to approach these topics from different ways to broaden the depth of this research.

Feedback:

This feedback has helped to narrow down which theme has the strongest foundations to carry out further research and develop game concepts.

Feedback:

  • All four themes were well researched and had clear persona connections
  • Texture stood out the most due to its uniqueness and shows a clear direction for further exploration (physical, visual, invented, abstract)
  • People were interested to see how texture could work in a digital game when the physical feeling is lost

Key warnings:

  • Don’t use texture just as an art style – if you pursue this theme it needs to be a core part of the gameplay not just the visual polish or world design
  • What will be the central focus of deep dove research?

Deciding to focus on texture:

  • Texture seemed to be the most unexplored theme in game design compared to my other themes which already have established games and even game genres.
  • My art background means that I have existing knowledge and will allow me to explore this physically and develop my knowledge through it.
  • I want to challenge myself to see how i can turn texture into a core mechanic rather than just a design choice
