Exploring the effects of smartphone overuse on student creativity and learning” (Trends in Social Sciences, 2025)

This study set out to look at how smartphone overuse among university students affects their creativity, concentration, and academic performance by trying to identify high screen time and academic outcomes.

As I had already assumed, having a drastically higher screen time negatively impacts all aspects of academic work from creativity to GPA. “Students who reported extended daily phone use, especially during learning hours, showed significantly lower GPA scores and self-assessed creativity levels.”

This reinforces the idea that in today’s time having good discipline is harder due to the constant distractions of smartphones that affect how easily someone procrastinates and has bad study habits.

Source: University of Dundee – “Reducing digital distraction and improving your focus when studying” (2024)

This guide was written to help guide and recommend their university students on how best to limit digital distractions. From turning off notifications, signing out of social media platforms, setting time for study breaks that not just involve looking at your phone but getting up and going on a walk / break.

This advice is actually helping students to build a solid routine utilising discipline to follow these steps. By changing the students triggers and context they are able to stay focussed for longer periods of time and not have the constant feeling of fighting distractions whilst working.

My experience:

I’ve always struggled with keeping focused on my work since I was a kid, and it has only gotten worse as I grew up with distractions such as playstation, PC, and Smartphones. I managed to get through school not with my own discipline but with someone always pressuring me to work. Knowing that i’m not the only one that has suffered with this issue does not make it any better, but reassures me that i’m not the only one. This subject goes deep into human psychology which could make an interesting foundation for a game idea.

Investigating Discipline Discipline: Discipline in life is the self-control and consistent effort to follow through with tasks in order to achieve a long term goal, even when you don’t feel like it.
