Although I’ve not pursued any of my texture or disaster systems, the research and time I invested in this hasn’t disappeared since I pivoted, it has helped me contribute and develop upon an established game concept.

Phase 3 exposed my weaknesses with my tendency to rapidly develop numerous concepts but not go into enough depth, also to be too optimistic about my scope estimates, and the easily made mistake of attempting to fill in for every discipline for the game concept. Both game 1 & 2 concepts were too basic to make any decisions on the long term viability the issue with this is that the gap between decking if the interesting idea could be a successful project wasn’t being bridged by the prototypes or feedback. There needed to be more depth, iteration cycles and user testing.

Phase 4 collaboration helped me to realise that I can focus and develop my skills alongside a talented 3D artist and work towards a strong game concept that has numerous systems that I can work on. Working with Hugo on Through Ash so far has demonstrated that one deeply executed idea is far better than multiple surface level solo concepts.

Building Through Ash:

The actual game development won’t start until semester 2 and fundamentally will be built completely different to phase 3s prototyping. Instead of quick proof of concept, we are building towards a complete, polished experience with numerous playtests, iteration cycles and professional documentation.

Looking at my role:

I will be working on the corse system implementation such as rover movement, UI frameworks, event triggers

I’ll also be organizing playtests to gather as much feedback as possible

Iteration based on feedback from both playtesters and peers.

Final Reflection:

This portfolio showcases my research depth, conceptual thinking, technical competence and showcases my ability to recognise when collaboration is the better option than going solo. Through Ash is the final outcome but learning how to produce this work in a professional manner with constraints is the final goal.

Next semester’s project development will put these lessons I’ve learnt to the test through fast paced development with the addition of having to collaborate with someone else. I will also find out whether collaborating will produce a more polished game and portfolio.

Project Development & Future Steps Reflection, Collaboration & Next Steps What this portfolio has revealed: Looking back across all four phases, this portfolio has showcased my steps from ambitious first conceptual themes, through to my overscoped phase 3 game ideas, and onto the collaborative execution of our project proposal in phase 4.
