This is more like a personal view
In Beyoncé’s Hold Up (2016), the original “floating in the water” part is open and poetic:

It is like a dream, like a gap between death and rebirth, and the audience has to feel her emotions. But in the second half, when she began to take to the streets to smash cars, these behaviors changed from personal experience to recognizable cultural symbols: water can symbolize rebirth, and baseball bats can symbolize resistance. These images are already encoded in popular culture, and the audience can read them as soon as they see them.

When an artistic expression becomes something that everyone knows what it represents, it changes from a “symbol” to a “symbol”.

The advantage of symbols is that they have strong communication power and clear political positions; The bad thing is that the mystery and ambiguity disappear, and the audience can get the correct answer without thinking.

This is what Beyoncé is all about. She imitates anger, destruction, and destruction, but all this is carried out under controlled lighting, aesthetic design, and commercial MV logic. She is indeed taking on challenges, but the challenges themselves have become part of the commodity. When everything can be packaged as empowerment and liberation, the real danger or sincerity is gone.

The film’s imagery of destruction is recognizable and effective in the iconography of contemporary female empowerment, but it can also be formulaic, reducing rebellion to an aesthetic expectation rather than a real breakthrough.

In Kustom Kar Kommandos (1965), Anger doesn’t tell you what he’s talking about. He just photographed a boy wiping a pink car. The camera slides between leather, chrome, gestures, gloss, and the viewer can only guess: this is desire? Narcissism? Mechanical worship? Same-sex symbols? This attitude of not explaining gives the audience the right to interpret, so the audience becomes a co-creator. Everyone projects their desires in that layer of light.

And Beyoncé’s Hold Up tells you: “It’s feminine power.” smashing cars is resistance”, she has helped you decide on the correct reading, so people as spectators have no room to breathe or misunderstand.

Anger’s ambiguity is an invitation; Beyoncé’s gesture is a declaration.

Anger’s lens gives a voyeuristic excitement: you’re watching someone immersed in their own world, and he’s not looking at you.

The audience is passive, curious, and even ashamed. This distance is the charm of the intersection of eroticism and art.

And Beyoncé always looks at the camera. Her gaze is controlling and political. This makes the image safe because all the meaning is in her hands. So you will not be afraid, nor will you be confused, you will only understand.

After understanding, it is boring.

This is NOT a official blog.
