As the player you deal with a hostile boss that will fire you for any performance that isn’t perfect, and the consumers are always needing to be assisted.

My game idea is also mainly set inside a supermarket and the anxieties revolving around it. I feel that this game has mechanics and themes quite similar to what I want to make. In this game you need to:

Be alert – this creates the mechanic of being able to check left and right while stocking shelves.

Be stealthy – the player can hide into employee only zones to get away from the consumers. You also need to make sure there’s no one in the isle where you need to stock or you’re guaranteed to be asked for assistance.

Be quick – the timer begins the moment you start stocking, you have to stock as fast as possible to avoid being interrupted abruptly and immediately having to take the consumer to the isle they’re looking for while on another very short timer, and if you fail you get fired and start over (fetch quest). During this event the music speeds up as well, informing you to be quick.

Be efficient – before the store opens you can put the boxes in the isle they need to be stocked in to prevent having to run around the store while the consumers chase you. You can also throw the boxes at the consumers as it stuns them, this is a mechanic.

As the player you need to make sure you are familiar with the environment for maximum efficiency. The isle names are at the top of each isle and there’s —-

All of these are the pillars for my game, making it easier to visualise what my game could look like.

The developers are conveying the nature of working in a horrible work environment and having to deal with terrible treatment just to survive, just to then do it all over again every day. The game is fast paced, overwhelming, scary and the atmosphere is suffocating.

Aesthetics:

Aesthetically the store is engulfed in a thick yellow fog, which feels sweaty, moist and suffocating, quite uncomfortable, and all the characters are somewhat off putting. The whole game has pixelated low-poly characters and art.

Narrative aspect:

At the end of the first day, we go back home late in the evening, tired and hungry. Here we can interact with the objects in the home. Walking in we can notice a note on the table, this is an eviction notice, telling us to pay in time or were out. We then walk to the fridge, open it and see there’s no food inside, so we order pizza. The pizzaman is this overly energetic worker who is obviously trying to make sure he’s giving top tier customer service. When we shut the door in his face his façade falls, creating contrast between his work persona and who he really is, just a normal guy going far and beyond just to make some money, which is exhausting and too draining for the small pay. His reality matches our own, were barely paid enough to afford meals and rent.

What I’m taking:

The checking left and right mechanic

A similar shelf mechanic where instead of stacking it’s a mechanic where you pick one of the items and put them in your cart.

Intractable shelves being highlighted in a way, making them look clearly interactable.

Mobs “challenging” you in some way.

Large isle names thing to mark locations.

Music speeding up during the Mobs fetch quest, except for my game it would relate to anxiety levels.

This week I played “Night of The Consumers” and it’s a game about the experience of being stuck working in customer service made by GERMFOOD.
