I almost never make a list whenever I do my shopping, and so I often end up going home without one or more of the specific things that I specifically left the house for, leaving me feeling really stupid.

When I think back on the experience, I realise that often the reason I’d forget in the first place was because I was so focused on appearing like a normal person and avoiding getting too close to people. For instance, one time I really needed ketchup, but when I approached the isle, I noticed someone was standing right by the ketchup, wanting to avoid any potential awkward interaction like waiting for the person to move away I just told myself subconsciously I would come back later and did the rest of my shopping. However, when I go shopping it tend to follow a path since I know where most of the stuff I need is, meaning that telling myself to go back doesn’t work, when I reach the end of my usual path my brain automatically assumes shopping is done and we can finally leave the store. If I remember what I didn’t get just after leaving the store, I do not go back due to embarrassment unless I really pull through and turn around.

So, as a baseline, I was already sure that I wanted it to be an anxiety inducing game, specifically related to the people around the player as I wanted to give people some level of insight into what social anxiety can feel like for some, and why it’s not really controllable.

In conclusion, the game should:

Make the player feel stupid from not remembering the list

Make the player anxious about being seen “messing up”

Make the player feel like they’re constantly being watched and observed for everything they do

Make the player want to avoid the people around them

The idea that came with this is a game where you have to memorise a grocery list before heading out. On the way and inside the store you’d be observed by the people around you and possibly “challenged” randomly with a small minigame to beat, but more often than not, all while trying to do your shopping.

What should be going through the player’s head is the list, over and over to not forget, and the NPC interactions are supposed to make you forget the list and make them feel frustrated with themselves.

The NPC interactions are supposed to represent overthinking every time you walk past someone, even within the world, none of the things the NPCs say is actually being said, it’s just how they see the world.

With this in mind, the player should be hyper vigilant of everything they do and the people around, all while trying to remember the list

When I thought about the game concept it was strongly related to how I feel when I do the groceries.
