Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a lifelong neurological and developmental disorder characterised by difficulties in social communication\/interaction and restricted, repetitional behavioural patterns. This can manifest in difficulties understanding and expressing emotion, engaging in reciprocal (back-and-forth) conversation, and maintaining eye contact among other potential difficulties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD), on the other hand, is a mental health condition defined as an intense fear of social situations and a constant fear of being judged, embarrassed, or humiliated by others. Individuals with SAD can suffer from severe self-consciousness, and constantly fear being negatively evaluated by others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prevalence for SAD in autistic individuals is estimated to be as high as 50%. For comparison, the estimates for the non-ASD population is speculated to be around 7-13%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The majority of children with ASD tend to face frequent rejections during childhood, causing them to become quiet and avoiding, withdrawing from engaging socially. As it so happens, many of these characteristics are also found in SAD: this has caused the image of individuals with ASD to become widely confused, and leading many clinicians to give a false SAD diagnosis, as well as delays in establishing that patients are struggling from ASD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Scholars studying ASD and non-ASD individuals have indicated that the differentiation between ASD and non-ASD social anxiety is covered in why they are experiencing social anxiety. Theological studies in psychology have shown SAD may occur due to adverse social experiences in childhood, a perception of threat associated with social situations, lack of self-belief, impairment in attention and emotional processing, among a range of other coping behaviours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
