Week 4 – Speculative Evil

Design Fiction – Speculative Design

“Using design as a tool to create not only things but ideas to speculate about possible futures.” – Dunne & Ruby

“Imaginative fiction trains people to be

aware that there are other ways to do things and

other ways to be. That there is not just one civilisation and it is good and it is the way we have to be.” – Ursula K. Le Guin

Although I wasn’t in for this lesson, I read some of my peers’ blogs to get an idea of what they did. After looking at their work, it seemed that everyone was doing a collage of magazine cut outs with one of their themes in mind.

Examples of collage:

Since I don’t have the materials to make a collage, I did mine on Procreate very quickly. Unfortunately, you can still see the pixelated edges, but you get the idea. This collage is supposed to represent a parasocial relationship.

Thoughts and takeaways:

Through this exercise, I have come to the understanding that designs can be used to explore ideas further, not just make props. Speculation can help us imagine different futures, this connects to my theme of parasocial bonds. The collage I made made me realise how much potential my topic has for exploring deisgn.

For this week:

  • Continue with research, just do one more topic. After that, start putting presentation together, once again, time yourself and take into account of things that could take up my time.
