For this mechanic, EJ explained to me that once the player is done with the village island, they will move onto the next. However, the player must look up into the sky and find the stars that guide them to the next island.

Sky

First of all, I needed to create the sky that the player would see. However, this needed to be bigger than the normal screen sizing (1920×1080), this is because when the player looks into the sky, the camera zooms really close in. An example can be seen in EJ’s prototype:

As we can see from the screen recording above, the canvas isn’t a rectangle, it’s a circle and when zoomed in, the stars get quite blurry. To prevent the pixel quality from decreasing, I made the circle 4000px in diameter.

^ This image was sent on Slack due to the file size being too big to send on Discord. I used galaxy and star brushes for efficiency. For colours, I used blues and purples as those are the colours we associate with the night sky and our Milky Way.

I sent over this image to EJ and asked me if I could put trees around the circumference (image below)

This was barely visible but I thought it would’ve shown in game. Then EJ notified me because the sky is circular and the camera is a rectangle, the centre part would’ve been out of scene. I didn’t need to fix this mistake but I had to keep it in mind because I was then asked if it was possible to make the circumference an ocean as this would fit within our game world rather than trees.

I finalised with this one and sent it over.

Mini reflection

Reflecting on this process, the feedback I was getting from EJ helped me adapt the work I was creating fit more effectively into the game engine. Replacing the trees with the ocean (for the circumference), made the world feel more cohesive and in tune with the game world environment.

Compass

For this compass, we wanted to use the Hawaiian compass for reference. EJ had already coded the compass to turn into intervals of 32 which aligns with the Hawaiian 32 point mental system that would’ve helped them to wayfind. When doing some light research on this compass, I noticed that there were birds in the centre. This is because the bird is supposed to symbolise as the navigator; birds are never lost at sea.

For my version of the compass, I wanted to make it a manta ray. There isn’t a cultural reason for this, more so a personal one. During the early development of Kauri’s character, he had undergone many iterations. One of the first iterations was an anthropomorphised manta ray and I really liked this idea. However, as I continued to develop my ideas, I preferred the version we have currently.

Incorporating this manta ray into the compass design became a subtle way to preserve the memory of the game’s early creative development. It also helped maintain the oceanic and nature themed aesthetic present in the design without making it too obvious to the players.

(These are the very early development manta ray player character iterations)

I changed the colour of the arrow so it becomes more clarified to the reader that one direction is obviously North

Mini reflection

Reflecting on this design choice, I have realised that even discarded designs can make small comebacks to influence the project in meaningful, personal ways. Rather than abandoning old ideas, elements of their design can be reworked into smaller details that may seem insignificant, but something meaningful for me as the visual director, and adds cohesion into the world.

Assets in game

This is what the compass and the sky would look like when the player needs to find the next island:

Stars

For the sky, we also need some stars to twinkle and for the player to find for the constellation.

Above are some iterations of the stars I did. I didn’t go through with the iteration with the top left one because I thought it looked awkward seeming as they’ll be placed throughout the sky. It was a simple resolve as I just needed to erase it. The symmetry tool was used on radial, which is perfect for stars.

I then settled for the last iteration as I liked how simple they looked, yet they were differentiated by their silhouette. EJ wanted me to animate these stars to pulsate so they look more lively in the scene.

Animating the stars

Before animating the stars, I looked on YouTube to give me some point of reference. I came across this video I liked but it looked too dramatic for our scene as it disappears, making it seem more dramatic than it should:

When I had sent these over, I didn’t realise how dramatic they looked. After getting some confirmation from my team mate, I knew what needed to be done. I needed the stars to have less movement in the frames and to only pulsate slightly.

I sent this animation over to EJ and we both liked how minimalistic it looked in the end. I added these small sparkles shooting outward like in the video form YouTube, to make it look like it was twinkling slightly. When both me and EJ agreed on the animation style, I made the other two stars animations and added the same sparkle effect

Mini reflection

I feel like I had gained enough confidence during the animation of the stars and noticed that they aren’t too choppy to the point of becoming too distracting or visually unpleasant. Although the animation style remains fairly simple, I believe this compliments the hand drawn, indie aesthetics of our game.

Constellation for Inventory

In Kauri’s book, there will be a depiction of a man with a spear. I was asked to make this constellation not obvious as to what the player needed to look for. However, I needed to still show that the spear was the main point of interest.

Below is a draft of the constellation. I showed this to my team mate for approval then began to further develop it

Below are iterations of star placement. I was asked to not make the constellation as populated as I did for the first one as it tends to get confusing. Then removed some more stars so the constellation looks more neat. For the man’s body, I made it look sketched by someone as this would go in the book for the inventory when Kauri picks up the pages.

Asset in game

Mini reflection

^ This is what the asset would look like in the game in the book inventory, as I made this asset look very pen drawn, it fits within this book because it looks hand drawn and fits within the context of our game environment. Although the earlier constellation consisted of more detail, it also lost clarity, which is important for our players to have. Reducing the amount of stars made the shape easier to interpret as when the players look into the sky, they won’t see the man. Instead, they will see the stars inside of the man (constellation).

This task strengthened my understanding of balancing game play mechanics and environmental story telling, as the stars needed to convince the players that these drawings were drawn by something that belongs in Kauri’s world.

Grand Sprout’s hut

Before the player enters the island, Kauri wakes up in the good Samaritan’s house who he finds out is Grand Sprout.

For this background, I was told that I could design a small room and EJ would make the surrounding area black. This design choice would make it so that the player would focus what was going on in the cutscene where Kauri talks to Grand Sprout. With this creative freedom, I wanted to make this room short but long.

Reason being why I wanted to make this room with low ceilings is because within the context of the island and the inhabitants, the Sproutlers are very small creatures. This would mean that they need shorter ceilings, but other than the logistics of the scene. I believe that making the ceiling shorter gives it a cosy, warm feeling where the player feels safe in. This greatly reflects the predicament they face (being in a storm and washed up on a beach without your fish hook), and needing to re-establish their bearings.

The screenshot above shows the quick thumbnail I did and using Kauri as a sizing reference. One of the most important things I needed to nail down was making a room that felt lived in and slightly weathered away. I wanted it to look old and minimalistic while showing Grand Sprout’s personality.

The room is dark, but the rays of Sun make the scene feel cosy and welcoming. I made sure to keep some nature elements in this house by using a moss brush around the corners of the room and drew a single flower on the table. This further confirms that Grand Sprout is not a threat.

Other Small Assets

We needed to have a fish hook for Kauri’s grappling ability, however, there were some story telling inconsistencies. I designed a grapple hook that was made of vines but EJ wanted a proper grapple hook. The inconsistency here is that the point of the journey Kauri is embarking on is that he is going to FIX his fish hook:

To fix this issue, we just needed to add some dialogue from the Sproutlers explaining why his fish hook has vines all over it.

I came up with the idea that Rito (flower head sproutler), takes it upon himself to apply their island’s essence onto Kauri’s fish hook, hence the change of aesthetics and therefore, we still need the player to find the missing fish hook pieces.

I made this dialogue between Rito and Kauri that explains why our fish hook is now covered in vines:

Mini reflection

While doing these tasks, especially with the grapple hook, I have realised that as long as you create something that looks like it belongs in the game world and give it an explanation in the game, you can convince the player almost anything. However, me designing the hook to have vine aesthetics was more of a coincidence, we just needed a story that convinced the player so there wouldn’t be any plot holes.

Grapple Animations

Now that I had all the assets needed for the grapple, I needed to create a very quick animation of Kauri throwing the grapple. This needed to be preferably shorter than 6 frames as it needed to be a quick action.

EJ sent me some reference shots of Hornet from SilkSong performing an action. There’s at least 2-3 frames of anticipation, then there’s the action frame, which in this case, would be Kauri throwing the hook then being dragged towards the area where he grapples.

These are some quick drafts I did of Kauri doing the action, the first one is Kauri grappling towards him, and the one after that is Kauri grappling upwards.

Below, I started to do the line work and neaten up the animation slightly:

The red line shows where the vine would shoot out from, so putting his hand in the correct space was important or it would be slightly offset. The action is fast, so I’m not too worried about the player’s seeing the imperfections.

Below, is the finalised throw animation (forward)

I did the same processes for the grappling upwards. Once I was done for both animations, I put them on a sprite sheet ready for implementation.

New Rock Tile Set

When I had watched Parker and Esi playtest our game, I noticed that for the blocks that would crumble (and disintegrate) and blocks that would fall (these would be collidable), they would be the normal tile set that EJ recoloured. However, when I was watching, I was getting confused as to which blocks were collidable and which ones were going to disappear. To fix this issue, I wanted to create two similarly coloured tile sets with varying details for the blocks that would get affected by player interaction.

Above, I did the tile sets, the ones with cracks would be the blocks that disappear shortly after interacting with the player. The tile set that would fall and become something the player could stand on would have no cracks, would be more detailed, and have small leaves coming out of the rocks so the player’s would be able to differentiate between the two types of interactable blocks.

Mini reflection

This task was a breeze, I was able to get these done within an hour or so due to previous experiences in past sprints. This tile set was especially easy due to the symmetrical formation throughout. I have also gained a greater understanding of visual design in game play. I wanted these tile sets to be distinguished from the main tile set. It was also important that I detailed both tile sets correctly. I believe it’s the correct assumption to say that we collectively think when something is cracked in game play, it will break. On the other hand, if it’s solid, it’s probably a collidable object.

Comics!!

End comic

Now, finalising this sprint with something I was looking forward to making, but not sure if we were both going to have enough time to implement. This was something that was EXTREMELY low priority and doesn’t contribute to the game’s mechanics, however, I wanted this comic strip to show the player the narrative.

I asked EJ if he could make each panel appear one by one in chronological order, this is so that the player anticipates for the next panel that’ll show up.

I started off with creating a comic for the end scene as I didn’t want the player to complete a hard platformer and end with a blank scene. I wanted to give the player a sense of closure when completing the game. I began to story board the scene of events that would play out after the player collects the last piece.

In the draft above, I wanted to show the main frames of the comic and mainly to show EJ my ideas for it. During this process, I also looked at how to involve the player using panel composition and cinematic camera framing to understand how visual storytelling techniques can be used to enhance the player’s immersion.

I saw this image on Pinterest and it depicts different types of shots and what they convey to the reader:

For the draft above, I used several shots intentionally:

Very wide – This is to show the player where Kauri is right now and introduces the scale of the scene.

Symmetrical – Used to focus the player’s attention on the activity that Kauri is doing, which is repairing the fish hook. This creates a centred composition.

Bird’s eye view – Shows the shot from above and gives a sense of involvement from the player’s perspective

Low (camera looking up) – This is mainly to showcase the fish hook glowing, making it seem more significant.

I then started to deviate from the idea of a comic “strip” where panels are all equal sizing. EJ brought up the game Nine Sols and their comic style in which panels are asymmetrical. I believe this way of arranging a comic can show what panels are the most impactful:

( Screen shot from the game)

In this draft above, I began to play around with the panel arrangement and sorted the size of the panel with how long I wanted the player to look at that specific panel. The panels leading up to the last one creates the perfect build up. I also believe I have used the camera shots uniquely enough so that it refreshes the player’s eyes. I wanted to keep the rendering minimalistic to emphasise the glow effects and sparkles coming out of the fish hook.

Overall, this composition came out really well! I believe not putting the last frame of Kauri in a panel where the fish hook glow and his hat spilling out to other panels emphasises the moment even more.

Start comic

I had so much fun making the end comic, EJ asked me to make one for the beginning as well.

I started off with storyboarding the scene. With this comic strip, I wanted to involve wider shots, this is because the player will join the game as Kauri struggles to keep his boat on the surface. There will be a relentless storm trying to tear his boat down and I want to convey feelings of danger toward the player and to make them resonate with Kauri at the moment.

Here, I planned on making 2 pages for this comic. The first page would show Kauri struggling to survive in the storm and the second one shows him being washed up on shore, ending with Grand Sprout’s shadow in the shot.

Once I had shown EJ my ideas, I wanted to get straight to ClipStudio and commence with setting out the panels and detailing.

The image above shows the range of camera shot techniques I have used for this process. I started off with showing the weather, this hints to the player as to what events will transpire. Then I do tall shot of the large wave and to contrast, Kauri’s boat barely staying afloat. This shows the predicament he’s in and garner’s sympathy from the players. The mid section is a bunch of close ups of Kauri, capturing his desperation and the activities he’s doing in order to survive. The last panel of the mid section is a close up shot of his face, looking up. This is to build anticipation for the next panel. For the last panel. I have Kauri’s small boat going up against a large wave. At this point, it is inescapable and the page ends there.

To continue on with the story, jumping from a storm to a clear weather and wreckage from the previous ship. I wanted to show a variety of camera angles while keeping it short and concise while getting my point across. It was important to me that I build up an appropriate amount of anticipation and use it sparingly with the utilisation of wide shots and close ups. There is also a stark difference in the amount of panels with pages 1 and 2, this is because I wanted to show the difference in events. Page 1 is packed full of expressions made to build up to the climax panel. Whereas in page 2, nothing much happens, yet I want the player to remain curious as to what will happen next.

Assets in game

Mini reflection

I really enjoyed involving myself in comic making! Although it’s not really in my discipline, I believe it will still contribute to concepting a lot. This is because in comic making, camera shots and angles mean everything in order to get a reaction or build emotion within the reader. The same thing can be said about concept art. I believe I have more understanding of scale and how to build suspense in my work.

I am really glad I managed to squeeze time for this as I believe it adds to the quality and identity of the game.

In Preparation To Show Our Work + Additional Promotions

To promote our game in a more professional standard for both London and Winchester, we wanted to market our game in a professional standard. At the beginning of this journey, I approached my role purely from an illustrative point of view, not considering how my assets would look in game. However, as time progressed, I began to understand that art should compliment the environment and funcitonality of the game. Through constant collaboration with my team mate, iteration, testing, and failures, I developed a much stronger understanding of how the visual design I put out there supports gameplay and readability. Starting production was initially nerve wracking considering that this was our final project and I wanted to make something that reflects my 3 years here at Winchester. I joined E-Jay’s bandwagon as I believe that both of our opposing strengths would uplift and make eahc other’s skills shine even more.

One of my biggest strengths throughout this project was definitely how strong mine and EJ’s communication was. However since we both specialise in the opposite disciplines, our thoughts and words would get lost in translation. Either way, constant communication was essential in ensuring that the game play systems and visual design worked together harmoniously. Our discussions revolved around collisions, platforming, readability, environments, character, dialogue, and the small details that add up to make the experience only that more enjoyable. Having these constant discussions helped me adapt my artistic decisions in order to fit the game play requirements and limitations. I truly believe our communication and constant feedback was our greatest strength and it’s apparent through all of our screenshots. This constant collaboration mirrors industry practices, and has further strengthened my knowledge in problem solving, time management, and how to adapt.

Throughout this development, I have also become more confident in my own workflow. Early in production, I struggled with constant indecisiveness and not knowing if the decision I had made, was the right call. Due to strict deadlines and scope of the project, I learnt hoq quickly it is to plan and prioritise what needed to be done. As a direct result, I became more decisive when creating concepts and producing assets. This had greatly improved efficiency and becomes more apparent as the project progresses, most prevelant when I was making backgorund assets and backgrounds.

Another major area of growth for me was understanding implementation focused art creation. This included creating work such as UI, tile sets, sprite sheets, and particle effects had pushes me outside of my comfort zone and forced me to think more techically about my work and how it would be seen in game. Instead of focusing purely on aesthetics, I needed to consider factors such as readability, scale, and collisions. Testing these assets in game would prove the importance of iterative work.

However, no other feedback was greater than playtesting and seeing what our peers and the public think of our game and how they would navigate it. Observing others interact the game helped me understand the importance of accessibility and environmental readability. Some players struggled to figure out where to go next or found certain platforming sections too difficult to complete, this showed that level guidance is necessary for level design in games. Playtesting taught me that creating immersive worlds is not only about visual direction, but making levels hard enough for players to complete and feel rewarded afterwards.

One of the biggest personal achievements I have made is engaging in areas of my discipline that I am not entirely confident in. This primarily included working in animation. Involving in this medium was difficult at first, but as soon as I applied an animators workflow to my work, it became less daunting. While these animations are relatively simple, I believe the style that they’re animated in contributes to the hand drawn art style we wanted to achieve in the first place.

Looking back at this project, it has been my most valuable one yet at Winchester School of Arts. It refined my artistic abilities but it also helped me gain a deeper understanding of collaborative game production pipelines, implementation, and professional practices. But above all, it reinforced my passion for creating immersive game worlds and showed me how much I truly enjoy visual storytelling and interactive design.

Thank you for reading along!

(Our Miro board)

I decided to make another sprint as I was technically done with the big tasks.
