I liked the idea of shadow and light being polar opposite, visually contrasting and symbolic for good and evil. The idea of playing with visuals to represent a deeper message makes me excited, so I decided to make a mind map specifically for shadows and light to explore the possibilities further.” – Quote from my week 1 post.

My research on the topic of shadow and light led me in many directions. I wanted to explore the more symbolic concepts attached to the topic, but didn’t want to overlook the value of researching the actual function of shadow and light in the world. I was also interested in artistic use of shadow and light, in photography, art and film.

Initial research

Shadows require a light source to form. When the light hits an object, the shadow is formed behind it. As the earth spins, shadows created by sunlight change shape, shifting direction and growing longer or shorter depending on the position of the sun in the sky. This is a cyclical process, one that repeats every day.

Shadow has many practical and artistic uses, including telling the time, providing entertainment, helping with artistic approaches and our scientific understanding. Shadow and light can also be used to represent good and evil, or the concept of Yin and Yang, a philosophy that represents the dual nature of reality. The force of Yin is often associated with darkness, femininity and passivity, and Yang associated with light, masculinity and activity. Each side works in unison, with a small part of one existing within the other. This fuels the idea that there is always some evil within what is good, and some good within what is evil.

Why is shadow and light interesting?

I’m interested in our perception of good and evil, and exploring how conflicts aren’t always black and white matters. How do we determine if anyone is wholly good or wholly evil? My hope is that by using a visually constricted colour palette to explore this topic, we can not only subvert expectations and challenge our human psychology, but also portray complex issues in a simplified, easy to digest format. I also just really like the artistic style of the limited but contrasting colour palette of black and white, and the gothic old – timey feel it provides.

References:

Macmillan Hunter Sundials.
