After, we had to make our own using a known backstory (e.g. Little Red Riding Hood, Vampires, etc.). My group and I chose <em>Goldilocks and the Three Bears<\/em>. She went over the elements that make up an effective narrative as well as compelling characters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Main Elements of a Murder Mystery:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1\">Concept<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Premise <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Characters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Logic<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-background is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Concept<\/strong>:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What your murder mystery game is about and the demographic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2 wp-block-paragraph\">A murder mystery game inspired by <strong>X<\/strong> for <strong>Y <\/strong>players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:26px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Premise<\/strong>:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Set up: <strong>Characters <\/strong>are at a <strong>location <\/strong>because&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Twist: <strong>X <\/strong>is actually <strong>Y<\/strong> (distinct from the murderer&#8217;s plot line)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:26px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Characters<\/strong>:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3 wp-block-paragraph\">Essential Characters:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Victim (NPC)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Secondary Victims (NPC) &#8211; the motive for murder (e.g. people, animals, or concepts (a successful career))<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mastermind &#8211; architect of the twist<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Murderer &#8211; person with means, motive and opportunity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-4 wp-block-paragraph\">Supporting Characters:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They corroborate key info about the Victim, Mastermind and Murderer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lover &#8211; agent of chaos motivated love, lust or obsession<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fool &#8211; clumsily or carelessly wreaks havoc<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5 wp-block-paragraph\">Other Utility Characters:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Blackmailers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assassins<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Merchants<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Amnesiacs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Innocent Witnesses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:26px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Rules to Keep in Mind<\/strong>:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Clear up the logic <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Red herrings are annoying &#8211; make them actually come back around and link to the plot.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People expect murder, not tragedy so try to avoid triggering topics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Expect players to arrive unprepared (give them the gist in under five mins).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PLAYTEST<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tell players what they don&#8217;t know<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-content-justification-space-between is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-3997d898 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To start the week off, we did a narrative based exercise: making a comprehensible story from five prompt cards, which we also did in year 1.
