Today was the start of the Professional Context module. The speaker today introducing the module was Adam Proctor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Adam introduced the module by talking about professional practices in the industry, like CVs, Cover Letters and your portfolio. He talked about being a member of UKIE, and other organisations in the games industry like IntoGames and TIGA. He talked about the ambassator role for the year and the requirements for this module, a total of 3 thousand words in a blog post. He also described the basic structure of the module, turn up, take notes, ask questions and then write blog posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He talked about the importance of business cards, and how they should be formatted. In terms of CVs, Adam said that 50% of your CV is about you the person, and the rest is about the work that you can produce. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
For projects, Adam suggested that you start each project strong, and end each project strong. He also said that career pathways are not necessarily linear and can ebb and flow and change over time. He also mentioned the Universitys Entry Level Skills Hub and the University careers support service in general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In terms of best practices, Adam said to make notes, reflect on my practice, how it might change and what it would support, and warned that I should be prepared to talk about my project. He also suggested to get copies evidence of the work I’ve done by taking photographs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What I need to do next: Creating a dedicated portfolio site would be a good first step, as it would allow me to present my best work easily and in a professional context. I would start by researching website builders to find one that works best for me.
