data-end=\"531\">This project was developed during a 48-hour Game Jam with the theme <strong data-start=\"300\" data-end=\"312\">\u201cMasks.\u201d<\/strong><br data-start=\"312\" data-end=\"315\" \/>From the very beginning, we wanted to explore not only masks as a gameplay mechanic, but also as a <strong data-start=\"414\" data-end=\"436\">narrative metaphor<\/strong>\u2014something that empowers the player on the surface, yet potentially limits them in deeper ways.<\/p><p data-start=\"533\" data-end=\"873\">Our final game is a <strong data-start=\"553\" data-end=\"585\">2D combat-focused experience<\/strong> with a looping narrative structure. The player takes on the role of a hero who repeatedly challenges a dragon, gaining masks before each attempt. These masks appear to make the hero stronger, but the true path to victory lies in rejecting external power and trusting one\u2019s own abilities.<\/p><h5 data-start=\"880\" data-end=\"917\">Initial Idea &amp; Gameplay Direction<\/h5><p data-start=\"919\" data-end=\"1259\">Our first idea was to create a <strong data-start=\"950\" data-end=\"989\">2D side-scrolling action platformer<\/strong>, where players could obtain different masks that unlock new abilities (such as double jump, dash, or special attacks) to access new areas. The structure was inspired by <strong data-start=\"1159\" data-end=\"1193\">Metroidvania-style progression<\/strong>, where exploration and ability gating are core to the experience.<\/p><p data-start=\"1261\" data-end=\"1574\">However, after several rounds of discussion, we realised that within a <strong data-start=\"1332\" data-end=\"1354\">48-hour time limit<\/strong>, it would be extremely difficult to innovate meaningfully on mechanics alone. The scope of programming required\u2014movement systems, ability interactions, level design logic\u2014was simply too large for our team and timeframe.<\/p><p data-start=\"1576\" data-end=\"1779\">At that point, our teammate <strong data-start=\"1604\" data-end=\"1614\">Jeremy<\/strong> proposed a new direction:<br data-start=\"1640\" data-end=\"1643\" \/>Instead of relying on complex mechanics, we could focus on <strong data-start=\"1702\" data-end=\"1729\">looped narrative design<\/strong> to deliver the core message of the theme <em data-start=\"1771\" data-end=\"1778\">Masks<\/em>.<\/p><p data-start=\"1781\" data-end=\"1832\">This shift became the turning point of the project.<\/p><h5 data-start=\"1839\" data-end=\"1864\">Final Gameplay Design<\/h5><p data-start=\"1866\" data-end=\"1972\">The final game is a <strong data-start=\"1886\" data-end=\"1904\">2D combat game<\/strong> structured around repeated encounters with the same enemy\u2014a dragon.<\/p><ul data-start=\"1974\" data-end=\"2401\"><li data-start=\"1974\" data-end=\"2030\"><p data-start=\"1976\" data-end=\"2030\">The player plays as a hero who must defeat the dragon.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2031\" data-end=\"2124\"><p data-start=\"2033\" data-end=\"2124\">Before each challenge, the hero receives a <strong data-start=\"2076\" data-end=\"2084\">mask<\/strong> that increases <strong data-start=\"2100\" data-end=\"2123\">HP and attack power<\/strong>.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2125\" data-end=\"2270\"><p data-start=\"2127\" data-end=\"2196\">In the <strong data-start=\"2134\" data-end=\"2156\">first three levels<\/strong>, the player is forced to wear the mask.<\/p><ul data-start=\"2199\" data-end=\"2270\"><li data-start=\"2199\" data-end=\"2270\"><p data-start=\"2201\" data-end=\"2270\">Despite the increased stats, the player <strong data-start=\"2241\" data-end=\"2269\">cannot defeat the dragon<\/strong>.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li data-start=\"2271\" data-end=\"2401\"><p data-start=\"2273\" data-end=\"2327\">In the <strong data-start=\"2280\" data-end=\"2296\">fourth level<\/strong>, the player is given a choice:<\/p><ul data-start=\"2330\" data-end=\"2401\"><li data-start=\"2330\" data-end=\"2359\"><p data-start=\"2332\" data-end=\"2359\">Wear the mask \u2192 still lose.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2362\" data-end=\"2401\"><p data-start=\"2364\" data-end=\"2401\"><strong data-start=\"2364\" data-end=\"2401\">Refuse the mask \u2192 win the battle.<\/strong><\/p><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"2403\" data-end=\"2446\">The hidden rule behind this system is that:<\/p><ul data-start=\"2447\" data-end=\"2670\"><li data-start=\"2447\" data-end=\"2512\"><p data-start=\"2449\" data-end=\"2512\">The hero\u2019s <strong data-start=\"2460\" data-end=\"2511\">base stats are already higher than the dragon\u2019s<\/strong>.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2513\" data-end=\"2589\"><p data-start=\"2515\" data-end=\"2589\">When the player wears a mask, the dragon\u2019s stats <strong data-start=\"2564\" data-end=\"2588\">scale up accordingly<\/strong>.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2590\" data-end=\"2670\"><p data-start=\"2592\" data-end=\"2670\">By relying on external power, the player unknowingly creates a stronger enemy.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"2672\" data-end=\"2765\">Only by <strong data-start=\"2680\" data-end=\"2716\">trusting their original strength<\/strong>\u2014without the mask\u2014can the player finally succeed.<\/p><p data-start=\"2767\" data-end=\"2894\">This mechanic allowed us to express the theme <em data-start=\"2813\" data-end=\"2820\">Masks<\/em> narratively and mechanically, without introducing overly complex systems.<\/p><h5 data-start=\"2901\" data-end=\"2924\">Development Process<\/h5><p data-start=\"2926\" data-end=\"3010\">We chose <strong data-start=\"2935\" data-end=\"2944\">Unity<\/strong> as our game engine, as it is well-suited for 2D game development.<\/p><p data-start=\"3012\" data-end=\"3142\">Before this Game Jam, I had <strong data-start=\"3040\" data-end=\"3075\">almost no experience with Unity<\/strong>. However, the extremely tight schedule forced me to quickly learn:<\/p><ul data-start=\"3143\" data-end=\"3231\"><li data-start=\"3143\" data-end=\"3170\"><p data-start=\"3145\" data-end=\"3170\">Unity\u2019s editor workflow<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3171\" data-end=\"3193\"><p data-start=\"3173\" data-end=\"3193\">Basic C# scripting<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3194\" data-end=\"3231\"><p data-start=\"3196\" data-end=\"3231\">Scene management and combat logic<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"3233\" data-end=\"3439\">Although stressful, this rapid learning process was incredibly rewarding. Seeing my code turn into visible, playable results within such a short time gave me a strong sense of accomplishment and motivation.<\/p><p data-start=\"3441\" data-end=\"3593\">For collaboration, we used a <strong data-start=\"3470\" data-end=\"3491\">GitHub repository<\/strong> to synchronise our work, which helped us avoid conflicts and maintain version control during the jam.<\/p><h5 data-start=\"3600\" data-end=\"3615\">Art &amp; Audio<\/h5><p data-start=\"3617\" data-end=\"3679\">Due to time constraints, we made pragmatic choices for assets:<\/p><ul data-start=\"3681\" data-end=\"3915\"><li data-start=\"3681\" data-end=\"3709\"><p data-start=\"3683\" data-end=\"3709\"><strong data-start=\"3683\" data-end=\"3697\">Art Style:<\/strong> Pixel art<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3710\" data-end=\"3747\"><p data-start=\"3712\" data-end=\"3747\"><strong data-start=\"3712\" data-end=\"3722\">Masks:<\/strong> Hand-drawn by our team<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3748\" data-end=\"3788\"><p data-start=\"3750\" data-end=\"3788\"><strong data-start=\"3750\" data-end=\"3766\">Backgrounds:<\/strong> AI-generated images<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3789\" data-end=\"3846\"><p data-start=\"3791\" data-end=\"3846\"><strong data-start=\"3791\" data-end=\"3817\">Dragon &amp; Hero sprites:<\/strong> Sourced from online assets<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3847\" data-end=\"3915\"><p data-start=\"3849\" data-end=\"3915\"><strong data-start=\"3849\" data-end=\"3875\">Sound Effects &amp; Music:<\/strong> Selected from Unity\u2019s asset resources<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"3917\" data-end=\"4070\">While not all assets were created by us, we focused on ensuring visual consistency and clarity, prioritising gameplay readability data-start=\"4077\" data-end=\"4091\">Reflection<\/h5><p data-start=\"4093\" data-end=\"4271\">Because of the limited time, many aspects of the game remain rough, and there is plenty of room for improvement\u2014especially in combat feedback, animation polish, and level pacing.<\/p><p data-start=\"4273\" data-end=\"4307\">However, within just 48 hours, we:<\/p><ul data-start=\"4308\" data-end=\"4440\"><li data-start=\"4308\" data-end=\"4350\"><p data-start=\"4310\" data-end=\"4350\">Completed a playable game.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"4351\" data-end=\"4389\"><p data-start=\"4353\" data-end=\"4389\">Delivered a clear thematic message<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"4390\" data-end=\"4440\"><p data-start=\"4392\" data-end=\"4440\">Learned new tools and workflows under pressure<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"4442\" data-end=\"4607\">Most importantly, this project taught us that <strong data-start=\"4488\" data-end=\"4572\">strong ideas and clear narrative design can sometimes outweigh complex mechanics<\/strong>, especially in a Game Jam setting.<\/p><p data-start=\"4609\" data-end=\"4746\">Overall, this was a challenging but deeply fulfilling
