This class is the career development guide we have formulated for the University of Southampton. Its core lies in presenting a thought-provoking metaphor: work is the game that takes up the most time in one’s life, encouraging students to plan and design their own careers proactively like designers.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The core objectives of this career development guidance cover three aspects: Firstly, it helps us identify and acquire skills through course learning and extracurricular activities; secondly, it guides us to reflect on how to apply these skills to potential career roles; and lastly, it supports us in actively exploring both on-campus and off-campus resources to continuously develop our employability. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This time, the official university career development management center’s MyCareer online platform was introduced. This platform serves as the main entry point for all career services, where students can make appointments for consultations, participate in activities, and obtain information on opportunities. The “Successful Future” interactive path is a structured online guide that leads us through the process of reflecting on personal goals, assessing our own skills, and exploring career ideas with the help of an AI chatbot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, the Southampton Skills Model serves as a blueprint for self-assessment and improvement. These roles and skills include: the research ability and critical thinking of a subject expert; the business acumen and self-management skills of an understanding individual; the confidence and leadership of a challenger; the communication skills and teamwork spirit of a collaborator; the creativity and interpersonal network ability of an entrepreneur; the inclusive and adaptive leadership of a social innovator; and the problem-solving ability and resilience of a problem solver. In professional activities, we always need to analyze real job descriptions and discuss which skills are easy to prove and which are more difficult to prove, as well as how degree courses can help develop these skills. Teachers also encourage us to explore career paths by using various resources such as AI chatbots and industry websites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The guide roughly categorizes students’ career planning status into four types: still deciding on a direction; determined to enter the game industry; open to positions in other creative fields outside the game industry; and planning to become a freelancer or start a business on their own. In terms of personal brand building, the guide provides a detailed action guide for optimizing LinkedIn profiles, including perfecting personal information to establish a professional brand, actively expanding the network of contacts, joining professional groups, and following and applying for desired positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The employment destinations of past graduates are diverse, covering various roles such as game designers, user experience designers, 3D designers, marketing specialists, website designers, and freelancers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, everyone’s career story is unique. Students can distill and showcase their skills from a wide range of experiences, such as academic research, project practice, volunteer work, and part-time jobs.
