The main gameplay of the game is visual puzzle-solving.

I wrote a PDF document on the theme of the game world and shared it with my other team members, and we discussed together how to design the structure of the levels (whether it should be a multi-story building with different environments on each floor? Or just create one scene and have it constantly change?), as well as the overall art style of the game (British Royal style, Soviet style, Chinese, Japanese.etc )

worldDownload

We considered various level structures, such as designing the levels as a large building where players start from the top and explore downwards. During the exploration, they solve puzzles and understand the game’s narrative through the arrangement of furniture within the building. The advantage of this structure is that it allows our art to have more room for expression, and it also brings an immersive experience of exploration. However, the drawback is that we need to make some trade-offs in terms of game mechanics and puzzle-solving.

As for different art styles, my idea is that since we can expand upon the GDD framework, we can try various different art styles. Then I will write the corresponding game story. For example: For example, a Soviet-inspired architectural style could use furniture, colour, and objects to suggest a specific historical or emotional memory., then I can write a story related to Russia or the Soviet Union. This is not limited to the memories of the game characters, the Russian items in the game, etc. This gives us more room for creativity.

Reflection

I realized that having creative ideas is only the first step in level design. Although I explored various possible world settings, artistic styles, and spatial structures, and created game documentation to show to other team members, I also understood that these ideas needed to be balanced with the team’s technical capabilities and the resources we could use.

This made me realize that successful level design not only lies in creating an interesting environment, but also in making practical design decisions that support the game’s gameplay and the overall development process.

NEXT WEEK

Understanding the GDD and discussing team roles.
