But later I found that this will always occupy the player’s sight, and it is also easy for players to focus on the UI instead of observing the environment. But later when I experienced GRIS, I found that it hid almost all the UI. During the whole exploration process, players could hardly see any elements that interfered with the picture. This experience impressed me deeply, so I decided to take it as my main reference.

UI design analysis

The biggest feature of the UI of GRIS is “less”. Except for the pause menu and a small number of operation prompts, the screen is clean most of the time, without blood bars, maps, taskbars or complicated buttons. When players need to interact, the UI will appear briefly and disappear immediately after completing the operation. In addition, its font and icon design are very restrained, and the colour will not be particularly bright, but consistent with the colour of the whole game, so even if UI appears, it will not destroy the beauty of the overall picture.

My thoughts

I found that the UI of GRIS is more like helping players than reminding them all the time. This made me start to rethink my own game. Echoes of Luma itself is a slow-paced exploration game. If the goal is always displayed on the screen, players may not take the initiative to observe environmental details such as fountains, trees or street lamps, but keep following the task. So I hope to hide most of the UI and make the environment itself an important way to guide players to explore.

Finally, I decided that Echoes of Luma would adopt a design similar to GRIS. The task list, small map or target arrow will not be displayed all the time during the game. Only when the player is close to the interactive object, a simple interactive prompt will appear in the centre of the screen, such as:

Press E to Repair

After completing the interaction, this prompt will disappear immediately, allowing the player to return to immersive exploration.

Research 2：《Journey》

Reference content：Environmental Guidance

At the beginning, I also thought about adding task arrows to help players find puzzles quickly.
