Character Production

Character

I used Octopath Traveler as a reference for understanding how pixel characters can remain readable inside a 2.5D environment. Rather than copying its character designs, I focused on what could be learned from its visual method: clear silhouettes, controlled pixel density, readable clothing blocks, and strong separation between character and background. The Unreal Engine developer interview explains that Octopath Traveler II places 2D pixel characters within richer 3D environments, while still preserving the visual impression of pixel-art RPGs. This helped me understand that my characters needed to work not only as individual sprites, but also as readable game objects inside the forest scene. Therefore, I used larger colour blocks for coats, trousers, backpacks, and hair shapes, while keeping small pixel details limited to identity points such as collars, straps, pockets, and facial features.

Sprite Sheet and Character Animation

After finishing the static pixel character design, I created a sprite sheet for the main character to test how he would appear inside the game engine. This stage focused on two simple animation states: a running animation and a static idle / breathing animation. Since the character appears small in the 2.5D forest scene, each frame needed to keep a clear silhouette, stable clothing shapes, and consistent pixel density.
For the running animation, I focused on readable movement: leg motion, arm swing, slight body bounce, and keeping the backpack visually stable. For the idle animation, I used a very subtle breathing motion rather than complex movement, so the character could feel alive without creating unnecessary visual noise. This process helped me understand that sprite animation must work as a practical game asset, not just as a character illustration.
