Narrative Design & Player Engagement

Narrative Roles in Game Development

This week focused on understanding the distinction between Game Writer and Narrative Designer.
While game writers are primarily responsible for authored content such as dialogue, item descriptions, and cutscene scripts, narrative designers operate at a systemic level. Their role involves shaping narrative structure, character arcs, and world logic, while working closely with level design, mechanics, and player agency.
This distinction clarified how narrative in games is not only written, but designed through systems, constraints, and player interaction.

Narrative Roles in Game Development

The lecture highlighted several key questions that guide narrative design decisions. These include how story structure influences player behaviour, whether players control a predefined character or create their own identity, and how well narrative intent aligns with gameplay mechanics.
Rather than treating story as a separate layer, narrative design asks whether player actions meaningfully support the themes and emotions the game intends to convey.
