week5 Game Systems & Design Pillars
Game Design Pillars & Core Loop
This session introduced the concept of Game Design Pillars as a way to define the core values and intentions of a game.
Working from my own project, we identified a small set of pillars to guide decision-making and ensure consistency across mechanics, atmosphere, and progression. We then mapped out a core game loop, clarifying the player’s repeated actions and how moment-to-moment gameplay supports the intended experience.
Meta Game Systems & Player Motivation
The lecture also highlighted the importance of Meta Game Systems in sustaining long-term player engagement.
Unlike the core loop, meta systems operate over longer time scales, focusing on progression, upgrades, and unlocks.
Through group discussion, I began considering how a meta loop in my game could reinforce motivation, encourage replay, and support narrative and mechanical growth over time.
