This week’s learning content focused on level design and game atmosphere. The instructor mentioned many points about level design, which greatly inspired my work on GDD.
Level design involves creating spaces and tasks, and planning player behavior. It requires designing the player’s journey and providing visual and spatial guidance based on established principles.
Level design helps define the overall atmosphere of a game and determines the pace of the player’s experience, such as when to feel excitement and when to feel fear. It guides the player’s gaze and behavior through environmental design, such as shining a beam of light on a broken picture frame. In other words, it determines what the player sees and what they don’t see. It transforms the abstract game system into a tangible player experience.
