Week 9——Sound

This week’s class, I learned a point that I wasn’t aware of before. Sound is helping us tell a story of reality. Extending to the game, sound can also help players feel the game world and enhance the game’s sense of reality. Here are some of the functions of sounds that I have learned

  • Sense of reality

Sound has a special function, which is to help players determine the material of objects. Generally, players can tell what material an object is made of through vision, but this is not entirely accurate.

For instance, when concrete is carved into the shape of a tree stump and paired with appropriate colors, it may not be possible to directly determine its material through vision But can the material be accurately determined by the sounds produced when other objects collide with concrete.

The sounds of equipment colliding, weapons swinging, and treading on leaves can enhance players’ immersion in the game.

  • Hints and predictions

Unlike the sounds generated by players’ game operations, these are more like the background music of the game, which are music outside of game operations.

They have the function of helping players predict dangers or alerting them to claim rewards. For instance, during the game, if a dull and dangerous background music suddenly appears, it actually serves to remind players to stay vigilant as enemies are approaching. Another way is to make the originally cheerful music stop suddenly, allowing players to sense something is amiss and be alert to their surroundings. And when the battle ends, When players open treasures, a sound of gold coins dropping can be heard to inform them that they are claiming rewards and the battle is completely over.
