Looking back over the entire process, my initial role primarily involved narrative and story design, and in the early stages of the project I was responsible for establishing the basic plot framework and character relationships. However, as the narrative work was largely completed within the first two weeks, the team faced a shortage of art assets as production progressed, so I also began to assist with some of the art work. This adjustment alleviated the workload of other team members to some extent, whilst also enabling the programming team to access usable assets more quickly, thereby improving the overall efficiency of testing and iteration.

Whilst researching the psychological phenomenon of scopophobia, I discovered a strong correlation between its core symptoms and the plot design. This was particularly evident in the concept of ‘a girl talking to herself in front of a mirror, gradually developing a second personality’; this manifestation bears some connection to the social anxiety, intense sense of self-scrutiny and dissociative tendencies that some patients may experience. Consequently, adopting a narrative structure involving ‘switching between and dialogue between the two personalities’ was logically sound and allowed for a more intuitive conveyance of shifts in psychological state. However, upon reviewing the overall design, I also realised that whilst this concept is conceptually expressive, its impact on the actual gameplay experience may be insufficient, resulting in the narrative content feeling somewhat underdeveloped.

On the other hand, I have also reflected on my own lack of involvement at the technical level. I only began participating in the development of the website section during the later stages of the project, whilst the majority of the documentation and organisation work was carried out by the programming team, with Yushan shouldering a significant portion of the workload. By comparison, I did not provide sufficient support to the team during this phase and failed to effectively share the burden with her; this was one of the more obvious shortcomings of this project.

Furthermore, this experience has led me to reconsider the practical value of the ‘narrative design’ role within this project. Judging by the results, the core experience of the project did not rely on complex narrative progression, but focused more on mechanics and visual expression; consequently, the narrative component’s proportion and influence were relatively limited. This has made me realise that, in future projects, I need to assess at an earlier stage whether the narrative system is truly integrated with gameplay and interaction, rather than existing as a standalone module.

Overall, reflecting on this phase has given me a clearer understanding of the evolving nature of my role within the team, as well as the areas where I can improve in terms of task allocation, cross-disciplinary collaboration and the rationale behind narrative design.

In Week 11, I began to reflect systematically on the project as a whole.
