Week Five ->> Phase Two Presentation

Research

nodenogg.in questions from phase one presentation:

  • Did the glove fit?
  • How did the media attention affect the case?
  • Parasocial relationships in other media, streaming.
  • Cultural divide. Depp vs Heard. How do they affect modern culture?
  • Question: What society criminalises? What is a criminal?
  • Is it okay to monetise this?
  • Insensitive towards victims giving the guilty a voice, is it ethical?
  • Fan culture
  • The psychology behind being uncaring towards victims.
  • How does it affect individuals who do/don’t watch it?

What am I going to research to answer these questions?/Planned Slide Topics:

  1. Media Influence & Cultural Impact
    1. The Power of the Media
      • Meredith Fox case, how they focused on her being promiscuous instead of her alleged crime
      • How she got released and re-imprisoned twice
      • Uprising from the public during this case, applying pressure to the judge to finalise the case and making the final decision rushed
    2. Monetising True Crime
      • Argument if it’s entertainment vs exploitation
      • Making a documentary on victims to make money, never donating to the affected families.
    3. Cultural Shifts & Iconic Cases
      • OJ Simpson case, how the current culture affected the outcome of the case, Rodney King. One of the detectives was proven to be racist as well.
    4. Fan Culture
      • Elliot Rodger committed killings against women in 2014. Posted extensive videos online about his hatred for women, misogeny incel culture, red pill. This gained the ‘fandom effect’, people making merch and romanticising his YouTube videos of hatred.
  2. Psychological & Ethical Aspects
    1. Why are we drawn to true crime?
      • curiosity, emotions, entertainment
    2. Ethics and Exploitation
      • The main case is menendez brothers documentary, being made without the producer ever talking to the boys to get their side of the story. Ryan Murphy also created scenes that were completely fictitious to humanise their abusive father.
    3. Societal Perceptions of Criminals
      • The argument of them being considered monsters or misunderstood.
  3. Audience & Consumption Effects
    • Psychological Impact on Viewers
      • How can consuming media on violence affect the psychology of people? Desensitisation, enjoyment, fear of the world?
    • Behavioural and Social Effects
      • Mean world syndrome, thinking everyone is out to get them. Paranoia
      • Armchair detectives, thinking that they are better than the professionals
    • Media & Algorithm Influence
      • Sites like YouTube are pushing out true crime media online (Nexpo), and how this can affect detectives and current cases, the Smartschoolboy case is basically being voided because social media interfered. Netflix is trying to push out a lot of true crime documentaries for lucrative means, not to give victims a voice.
    • Parasocial and Ethical Dimensions
      • People form parasocial relationships with attractive criminals on online platforms. Online media, in turn, makes aesthetic posts about true crime and criminals.
  4. Reflection/Rethinking True Crime
    • What we need to do as people in society is to stop the formation of bad culture around True Crime. Consume consciously, no sleuth theories, respect and consent, moral boundaries.

Feedback

The individual feedback of this presentation will be used to aid the next phase, creating game concepts. What I can see in the majority of this feedback is mentions of influencers and exploitation. I will take this into account and will explore it in-depth in the next phase.

I will be pairing up with Camilla in the next phase as well.
