Week Nine ->> Phase Three Presentation + Prep

Preperations

Coming into Phase Three, Camilla and I decided to become a team. In the previous posts, you can see our process up to now on the game concepts.

We prepared for our presentation by creating a document on our three game concepts, completely delving into all core game aspects of them. This was during Week 8 and can be found there. In that document, however, we had plans to produce some prototypes to push the technical side of things.

I had to make a 3D block-out model for our Incel Culture concept and a Paper Prototype for Catnip Crimes.

Incel Culture Prototype Model

The main thing we wanted to showcase with our incel culture prototypes was the ability for us to create an intimidating atmosphere utilising lighting and intentional design. I followed Camilla’s concept art to test out how it would translate into a 3D format.

I started by making an isometric wall, as this is one of the design attributes that we wanted to include in this concept.

I then began to model the individual objects of the scene, focusing on the table getting done. I made sure not include the table legs to maintain that professional practice of not modelling things you cannot see to save polys.

I then continued on to producing the PC tower, as it would be something that would be in the main view of the player during the majority of the game. I made use of NURBs and other technical processes to produce this model.

I then set up the Arnold Render settings and prepped for the inclusion of light by removing the world light.

I made use of area lights and spotlights to produce the final prototype outcome. I used a hot pink to match the concept art from Camilla and then played with intensity, diffusion and defracting to achieve this outcome. I feel as though it successfully achieved an eerie vibe, and this prototype aided me in knowing what to do on the production side as well.

Catnip Crimes Paper Prototype

I made a paper prototype for our Catnip Crimes concept to showcase how the dealing mechanic would fold out, how interactions would occur, how you would gain money, and how different clientele would react in those situations.

Below are two post-its, describing two different types of customers split by quality, and how they are unique and different from each other. It discusses their behavioural choices as well. This was produced during the paper prototyping.

You can view the paper prototype video below to see these notes in action. I produced this paper prototype alone. We found this useful to explain our writing in a visual format, and it aided us in creating little admendments to this concept.

Here is our final presentation below!

Feedback

This time, we didn’t end up presenting this as we were both very unwell. However, we ended up with the next best thing: conducting a Google Form survey.

The feedback that we received from this was very useful, even though it wasn’t in the preferred format as previously.

Average Ratings

The highest average rating was from Incel Culture with an avg 3.9, Catnip Crimes came out lowest with an avg of 3.3. Animal Grief was the middle group with an avg of 3.4.

To whittle down the ratings, as we knew it would most likely end up a tie, we included an option to state your personal favourite.

Incel Culture won by a landslide, with Catnip Crimes coming as a close second. This is the explanation people had for their decisions.

Taking these views into account and our own personal favourites, we have decided to take Incel Culture further into Semester Two and produce the proposal document for that. Our future posts will be written with this decision in mind.
