Game Engine
Unity
We chose Unity as our game engine as it matches our wants and needs for our game production. It is also the engine we are most familiar with, and considering that neither of us aren’t very well versed in coding, it will be the most comfortable choice for our development plans.
Platform
PC
with eventual port to Console & Mobile
The game will be available for download on itch.io, with a later release on Steam, pending its popularity. The initial release of the game will be on the PC platform. The game will eventually be ported to console and then mobile if the game’s demand increases by a huge increase.
Mechanics
H-PS & SM + M-G
Hidden-Point System (H-PS)
This system will dictate what ending is triggered on the final day of the storyline, ending the game. This system is influenced by the player’s performance in mini-games and certain key choices in the dialogue. For now, we only have two endings, so this system can stay pretty simplistic for now. To achieve the good ending, the player must meet a positive threshold in the H-PS. They can achieve this by performing well in mini-games and choosing positive/successful choices within the storyline to keep the incel group at bay. To achieve the bad ending, the H-PS would be a negative value. This would make it so that the story would most likely end bad if the player doesn’t make a good effort to change the outcome, similar to real-world events. The player would have to perform poorly in the mini-games and choose negative choices that aid the incel group’s pursuit. The game will start the player in the negatives, with their choices having to be positive to achieve a good ending. There will also be some neutral choices as well within dialogue to keep it interesting and less easy to fix the outcome of the game.
Stream Morale (SM)
Stream Morale is a mechanic system that will be used during the Live Broadcasts/Stream section of the game. During the in-between moments, the player will be streaming to their viewers, where they will have to aim to keep the stream morale (SM) up while dealing with the incel group. They can increase stream morale by choosing the right responses to chat, picking the right lighting or music for the stream, posing, etc., to entertain their viewers, keeping them engaged, and the viewer count steady. If the player fails to keep stream morale up, then viewers will leave, and the majority of interactions will be negative towards the main character.
Mini-Games (M-G)
- Chat Cleanup (Easy) -> Incel group buys bots to flood her live chat with coded phrases and doxxing attempts. Players must react to a live chat and must ban/timeout/delete specific worrying patterns. The player loses points for ‘over-moderating’ if they delete the wrong messages, keeping the ‘stream morale’ up.
- Password Hardener (Medium) -> Incel group tries brute-force entry into her system -> Player has to type rapidly increasing complex passwords before the ‘crack meter’. Fake pop-ups occasionally happen to try to trick them and slow the player down.
- Firewall defender (Hard) -> malicious bots attempt to break into different sectors of her computer system. Lane layout, intrusion packets will attempt to travel all the way into her cpu. Player must drag & drop the right counter-measure onto them, matching the colour or symbol. By matching them all correctly, the player will have kept the system safe and pushed the attacks back.
- Final minigame (Insane) -> an amalgamation of a few minigames, making it hard. Story explanation would be a full group of people attacking at once and not just one obsessed fan.
Controls
Our game isn’t very complicated control-wise; therefore, we intend for the main controls to be utilising mouse and keyboard. If time allows it, we will include support for the Xbox controller, as many narrative games on the market include these usual implementations.
