Phase 1 – Week 1

Introduction

The first Monday session was a warm introduction back to uni life, the new Capital House building and of course, the final major project. Over this last year, we will begin with independent hands-on research and presentations, then work our way toward prototypes and polish.

The Brief

To get our brain cogs turning, the afternoon workshop had us get into pairs to create mind maps around 6 questions:

  • What makes you cry?
  • What stimulates you intellectually?
  • What excites you?
  • What makes you angry?
  • What makes you laugh?
  • What interests you?

The idea behind the exercise was to kick start us getting back into creative thinking and expanding on various ideas, aiming to encourage exploration around topics that could be interesting to research further. Below is one of the mind maps I worked on with Erik.

Adam then asked us to some more reflection and answer some more questions about the world around us:

From Monday onwards, the goal is to come up with as many ideas for research as possible, aiming for topics that I genuinely feel interested in and care about. I think what today’s session really succeeded in was driving home that we should not be thinking about games/mechanics yet, the first phase and couple weeks are solely for the purpose of setting up a foundation to build on.

Adam got us to come up with personal goals for the year and urged us to keep these questions in mind:

The week rest of the week will be introductions to the weekly tech sessions with Ross and the Professional Contexts module with Jordan and various alumni guest speakers.
