Sprint 2 – Title design + Doll character Makenah

Title design

Same as the environment art, I have tested with the font of our title at the last semester, It is going to be blending hair braiding/ handcraft objects into letters.

My aim is to make sure players can quickly understand which object the letter stands for, while remaining the text easy-to read.

For the base, I chose a bubbly font in Canva. It was giving a childish look which really recalled our theme. Also, the larger area of texts, the more obvious of the combination between objects and letters.

First draft:

First draft

Second draft: I kept the one design for one alphabet or else it would be too much element and confusing, I withdrew the design of the cracking “a”

Lining: Added mini glass beads beside the flower cloth for a better decoration usage
Final/ coloring: I chose pink, purple, orange and yellow, bright colors that children like as our title’s color palette. I also got rid of the line in “s” and it is the final!

Doll Character Makenah

I have done a Barbie doll version concept art for this character in semester 1, but both of us feel like it would be easier to make the doll craters Chibi size, for both programming and also players to access with the characters.

Barbie doll Makenah

About Makenah’s outfit, I designed 2 versions in semester 1, after seeking opinions from peers and tutors, they all think my second design suits Makenah more

Outfit 1
Outfit 2

Elaboration of feedback I have received:

Outfit 1Outfit 2
Bottom lengthToo short for a doll for 8 year oldLoner dress length, more conservative
Bottom typeBloomers (childish)Fluffy dress (childish, doll like)
Pattern designn/ascissors pattern design (childish, ensembles hand craft theme
Shoesstylish bootsCute MaryJane’s
OverallMatureDoll like

After elaborating those ideas, I decided to develop her 2nd outfit.

First draft
Esi’s responce

Esi felt the first draft was not the best for programming, I should have the character in a 3/4 angle, and should also draw the arms and legs more obvious

Second draft + Esi’s response

To be honest, I was more satisfied with my second attempt of Makenah’s concept art!

Drew once> gets familiar and better with Makenah’s facial expressions
Gingerbread like body > made arrangement of her body, the posture is clearer and she looks more like a legit doll than before

Final draft
Lining

First coloring attempt:

I was planning to make Makenah’s outfit somewhere in orange and pink color palette, to match with her easy going, happy personality. I was still new with watercolor, the color turned out lighter than I thought, It looked yellow but orange so I decided to redraw it

Second coloring attempt:
It looks so much better and I can finally to the shadows!

I have been deciding the eye color of Makenah, I was thinking about green as I thought It would look mysterious, I asked opinion from Esi

In that case, testing with these two color will be the best way to know!

Green eyes
Hazel eyes
Esi’s response.

I tried to mix some bit of green into the brow but it turned out really weird. At that time, I found a better shade of brown which perfectly suit Makenah, so I decided to have this as her eye color.

Reflection: This is the end of this sprint, I did lots of attempts for each part, asking peer’s opinions and I improve till it gets perfect. I am so far satisfy with my work through multiple tests, it was a really effective sprint. I am going to work on the next character, and I need to speed up for that.
