Music & Sound Design

Posted on December 8, 2025

The vision for the games’ sound and music design was first proposed in the week 11 presentation I did at the John Hansard Gallery with Hayley. Hayley made a cheerful snippet of a potential BGM, while I made a Spotify playlist.

We also included some keywords for the OST and the OST inspiration for the songs that could be in the game.

My Spotify playlist features “cute” and “gentle” fantasy music and piano covers from various video games like StarStable and Maple Story. I like the idea of mixing fantasy, cute and orchestral elements to create an array of immersive music for the player to enjoy.

What type of music could I include in the game?

While I have proficiency in Beepbox (and its mods) for making music, a few years ago, I also used to make songs on Soundtrap. While I don’t use this program as much as I used to, below are some unfinished pieces that could be reinterpreted and polished if I have time to do so:

  • Key feeling of the song: Sweet, Girly, Dreamy
  • Key Instrument(s): Piano
  • Effects: Harmony, Reverb
  • Key feeling of the song: Childish, Cheerful, Light
  • Key Instrument(s): Piano
  • Effects: Harmony, Reverb
  • Key feeling of the song: Exploration, Fantasy, Quirky
  • Key Instrument(s): Zither, Clarinet
  • Effects: Harmony, Reverb

Each of these songs hit different “style points” for the OST, so I could look into making something like this in Beepbox or SoundTrap. These could be overworld or minigame songs and could match Hayley’s MuseScore pieces.

I’d like my side of the OST to lean into the “dreamy/fantasy/exploration” side. Here is a BGM that demonstrates this feeling.

What type of sounds could be featured in the game?

Here are some sounds I got from Uppbeat.io’s “Cute Aesthetic” category. These could possibly be used for the tasks and UI.

  • New task appears?
  • Finish task?
  • UI select
  • Finish task

Other sounds could include: Nature wind swaying, birds tweeting, wood rustling and occasional laughter.
