Market Research

As Paula and I are working on the same game, I will be looking at the games she has researched and reflect on how they’re relevant to our game:

Steam description: Help Madeline survive her inner demons on her journey to the top of Celeste Mountain, in this super-tight platformer from the creators of TowerFall. Brave hundreds of hand-crafted challenges, uncover devious secrets, and piece together the mystery of the mountain.

Who is the target audience?

  • For people that like themes of mental health. This game is about self acceptance and self love.
  • People who love hard platformer games
  • For those who appreciate pixel graphics
  • For people who enjoy self improvement loops

Steam description: Forge your own path in Hollow Knight! An epic action adventure through a vast ruined kingdom of insects and heroes. Explore twisting caverns, battle tainted creatures and befriend bizarre bugs, all in a classic, hand-drawn 2D style.

Who is the target audience?

  • People who enjoy challenging metroidvanias
  • “Hidden” lore within the environmental storytelling
  • People who enjoy being left to their own devices. This game doesn’t tell you where to go next, meaning it involves a lot of exploration
  • People who love dark aesthetics

Steam description: Gris is a hopeful young girl lost in her own world, dealing with a painful experience in her life. Her journey through sorrow is manifested in her dress, which grants new abilities to better navigate her faded reality

Who is the target audience?

  • People who love amazing stories despite the absence of dialogue
  • Those who are able to resonate with its deep message
  • People who aren’t looking for a mechanically intensive game

Platforms

Thinking about the scope of our game, it is most likely only going to be available on PC. However, adding controller support is definitely something that will be considered. Creating a console port won’t be realistic for the scope.

My thoughts

After looking at these games and type of player they attract, I have a much better idea of what type of player might find themselves playing our game:

  • Players that enjoy tight movement mechanics
  • People who like world-driven puzzles
  • Impressed by hand-drawn 2D art style
  • Someone who is intrigued by a Polynesian-inspired game world
