During week 1, I managed to complete the bulk of my research into 1930’s culture and circuses. This week I’m going to pivot to my second two research topics, alchemy and cryptids, and compile them into a 10-minute presentation for the class.
MONDAY:
Blackout Poems – Jordan Magnussson

Give 1 tip to you last year!
Mine was: mock up as much practical work as possible. Make concept code and 2D models as well as 2D art and research pages to see what really works.
And: Be not afraid.
What are games systems?
LIFE IS STRANGE:
- Dialogue
- Time
- Interact
- Choices
PACMAN:
- Timer
- Score
- Collecting
- Enemy pattern
What’s the difference between components and systems?
- Components can be part of several systems at once
- Systems affect the game state

Blackout Poetry:

Unfortunately, since Monday’s group lesson, I’ve gone off the idea of alchemy since discovering one of my classmate’s, Ejay, is likely going to do it as well. Our course leader Adam also mentioned it’s been a fairly popular research point for multiple years. I want to come up with something original, so I feel like I have to stray away from ideas that have already been used, and strive for a bit more uniqueness.
I decided to change my topic to Paradoxes. This is a slightly more unique premise, and I’m interested in the idea of creating a gamespace that looks impossible, or paradoxical. This could be a mechanic that could be useful for a simple puzzle game, or a terrifying horror space – or both! They’re both genres I’m very interested in game design.
TUESDAY
On Tuesday, I locked myself in the labs after the tech session again to work on my research topics. My next one I narrowed down to “Monsters” – I became very interested in all variety of monster, from folklore to mythology to internet cryptid. I researched many different creatures over a broad range from all types of cultures!
THURSDAY
Thursday I pivoted to paradoxes. This was a difficult topic to research, as a lot of them are rooted in maths, and I’m not the best at understanding maths. But I quickly found a niche in visual paradoxes, and became interested in how I might be able to replicate one in a gamespace.
FRIDAY
Today I compiled all my findings into one presentation that should fulfil the 8-minute time slot for Monday. I wanted to make the presentation engaging, so focused less on copy-pasting paragraphs and more on interesting images that I could then explain in an engaging way.
