Week 8 – Art Direction & Visual Thinking

Reflection Focus

This week’s lessons have made me realise that visuals are not merely about ‘setting the mood’, but rather a means of conveying meaning that can be deliberately designed.
I began to ponder: when players wander without a clear objective, are light, colour and spatial rhythm already guiding their emotional state?

This is crucial for my current project, which centres on the concept of ‘gentle exploration’.

The Connection Between Semiotics and the Project

Through studying semiotics, I have begun to reinterpret the visual elements within the project:
• Light is not merely illumination, but a state of recognition
• Darkness / Night is not peril, but hibernation and a return to the self
• Ephemeral Bloom / Night Flower symbolises fleetingness ≠ meaninglessness

These visual choices themselves can convey emotion without requiring additional narrative explanation.

Preliminary Exploration of Art Direction

This week, I also realised that moodboards alone cannot fully support the complete experience.
I began posing some early Art Direction questions, such as:
• Should the colour palette lean towards low saturation?
• Should the spaces remain open and breathable?
• Do night and day visually support the game mechanics?

These considerations will directly influence my subsequent visual guidelines and world-building expression.

Summary

Week 8 has helped me realise one thing:
Visual design itself is a form of care for the player’s emotional state.
I aim to use restrained and gentle visual language to make players feel at ease, rather than being pushed or demanded upon.
