Week 6 – Poetry in Games

Jordan’s Lecture

During this day, we talked about our game ideas and Jordan gave us a quick lecture about poetry in games and that we should consider them when coming up with ideas of our own. In the afternoon, I was thinking about game ideas for the prototype presentation.

After Jordan’s lecture, I wanted to do some extra research and look at poetry in games. I stumbled across this game called “Paper Snow”.

I didn’t play it, however I watched someone else’s playthrough of the game. What interested me was the beautiful art style and the use of the colour blue. It has a melancholic feel to the game and the sombre, yet romantic words compliment this.

Thoughts and takeaways:

Looking at poetry in games as a whole, I think about the games I have played and how poetry is involved. Although some games I have played aren’t as direct about their poetic devices, they still convey it through colours to show emotions. A great example of this would be Gris. When I played through this game for the first time, I didn’t think it was much of a narrative game. However, with the use of colours to convey each stage of grief, it becomes more apparent to me.

As a game artist, with poetry in games in mind, I can use colours and certain brush textures to convey emotions. Art is poetic. I think I can use poetry in background art to imply scenes of danger, excitement, or fresh beginnings.

For this week:

  • Continue to brainstorm, some of the ideas I have currently are very narrative driven, not necessarily a bad thing, however, explore other genres of games design!
