Title: Haerenga (High-reng-ga)
Originally, the game was going to have a generic English title, however, I wanted to put more thought behind the meaning of our game. The title originates from the Maori word “to journey / voyage” this reflects the player’s progression throughout the game. It also closely identifies with the themes of exploration and adventure without ties with the spiritual.
Pitch: An island inspired puzzle platformer where players progress through interconnected rooms designed for trial and error. Failure is a core mechanic to learn how to uncover solutions within a hand drawn environment.
Target Audience: Targeted at players who love to navigate a challenging environment as well as hand drawn aesthetics that contrasts the challenging game play.
Art Direction: This game features a hand drawn and stylised aesthetic inspired by island landscapes. However, each island has its own visual identity, varying in colours, environmental landscapes, and shapes to create both distinguishable and memorable but also clearly readable during game play.
Before the production of this game, as the artist, I was initially going to create one island aesthetic rather than having 4 different identities for the game. Nevertheless, I discussed with EJ about varying visual identities. Although it would be quite the challenge and stressful to do, my aim for this project is to create a project with very strong visual landscapes.
