For project: A visual outlook or visual depiction of your character. Think about how their garments, why they dress the way they do, what chains of thoughts are behind their everyday clothing choices, what about the hairstyle, the makeup, etc. A mood board with reference pictures, colours, symbols and whatever information you see fit to express your character’s inner world.
For Monday’s class:
A character made of simple shapes. Make an animation if you wish OR Scan the character and add details to it using tracing paper
jAKEDetonator (2) – Key notes
- start with simple shapes
- Archetypes: villain / protagonist
- Thumbnails can be a good deliverable; sketches too
- Observation of real world people some people can look like characters maybe these are people that you have some sort of relationship (family?)
- Elevator pitch – know how to pitch the concept of your character
- You should not explain everything about your character, you want the player to let the player find out (mystery box mechanic)
“Characters give players a reason to learn about the world…”
- World building, systems building, and other high concept stuff becomes instantly more interesting and accessible when we understand how it impacts the sentient beings whose lives are shaped by these God’s-eye-view ideas – characters give players a reason to learn about the world
People are the raw material of social systems
Ensemble Storytelling: A group of characters who share equal importance in the storytelling
The dynamics among the characters in an ensemble cast can create intricate relationships that enhance both characterisation and plot development.
Ensemble:
- Each character can be the hero of their own story
- What happens when you design characters as if they were each the protagonist of their own story?
- You can give them motivations, personalities, and arcs that feel rich, believable, and memorable
- If you can see their viewpoints, you can create more interesting dynamics, encounters, conflicts, resonances and alliances
WARM UP ACTIVITY : FOCALISING CHARACTER

This warm up activity was too essentially have our character as silhouettes.
This is so my poses are more dynamic and easier to read or to communicate something about the character’s emotional state or personality. Which is especially important if an action ends up being important to your study Think does the audience need to know a character did a specific action.
