Yoruba (Nigeria) creation myth
✦ The gods were living happily in the sky at the beginning, and there was nothing but water below them.
✦ It was time for the Supreme Being, Olodumare, to take action and create the earth.
✦ The god of wisdom and purity, Obatala, received from him a palm nut, a snail shell containing sand, a five-toed chicken (as ordinary chickens were evidently too simple), and a golden chain.
✦ Olódùmárè gave him the responsibility of going down and making land with these things. Heading to the edge of the sky, Obàtálá was ready to begin to work.
✦ Then he saw a banquet being thrown by other gods. He paused to say hello. Obatala eventually passed out after drinking a bit too much palm wine.
✦ With the chameleon by his side, Oduduwa, Obatala’s younger brother, took matters into his own hands after witnessing his sibling being asleep.
✦ After grabbing the holy objects, he got the golden chain and found the fragment of earth below. When he came to the surface, Oduduwa let the five-toed chicken go and dumped the sand from the snail shell onto the sea. The chicken began scratching at the sand, spreading it widely, as chickens are known to do.
✦ According to the myth, is how dry land was formed, and the first piece of land was called Ilé-Ifè, which remains a sacred city for the Yoruba people.
✦ By the time Obatala woke up from his unplanned nap, it was too late, Oduduwa had already finished the job. Hence, he was hailed as the founder of the Yoruba race.
✦ Obatala, feeling guilty and determined to redeem himself, took on another important task. He became the sculptor of humanity, molding the first humans out of clay. It’s said that those with physical imperfections are a result of Obatala’s occasional slip-ups, which happened when he was still a little tipsy.
Essentially, this story is not only about creation; it also serves as a reminder of sibling rivalry, the need for moderation, the balance between responsibility and mistakes, and the notion that even gods require a second chance.
Hindu creation myth
✦ The Hindu creation myth begins with the universe existing in a state of chaos and darkness, with no form or structure.

✦ The god Brahma separated the elements of fire, water, air, ether, and earth to create the universe. Then Brahma made the gods and demons, the first living things.
✦ But the gods and demons were unable to live in harmony, so they engaged in a war in which the gods won. After that, the gods begged Brahma to create people so that they may worship and serve them.
✦ The first people were made by Brahma, but they were flawed and lacking wisdom. The gods corrected this by teaching mankind how to conduct rites and rituals and by providing them with the Vedas, a collection of holy writings.
The Hindu creation myth is known as the Purusha Sukta and is part of the Rigveda, one of Hinduism’s oldest and most important texts.
