Little Misfortune

Little Misfortune review | Rock Paper Shotgun

  • The 2d art and how it’s styled like a kids storybook
  • How it looks innocent but includes horror elements
  • The choices
This may contain: a cartoon girl holding an umbrella in the rain with trees and hills behind her on a rainy day
  • It’s very similar to one of my game ideas and I remember watching gameplays when this game first released.
  • This game also includes a unreliable narrator who is actually the antagonist of the game, but what I really like is how they conveyed the horror in two ways the narrator and the substance abuse/ domestic abuse Little Misfortune faces from her parents. Her naivety and her innocence is what makes the game feel so sad and realistic.

I decided to play the demo version because I just wanted to experience the gameplay itself. I liked the decision loading screen as it kind of glitches out.

There were also many puzzles you could do throughout the game and you see the horror element of the game pretty early on as well.

I also like how you get a insight of Misfortunes life through her diary. It’s sad to read but also makes you want to protect her especially when the game opens with her a line about her dying.

It makes you want to protect her and hope she survives with your decisions.

  • One of my game ideas also include a unreliable narrator and I wanted the art style to look like a story book. I feel like Little Misfortune is a great inspiration for my game idea because of how they convey the story to the player.
  • W,A,S,D as movement
  • E to interact
  • F for glitter
  1. You’re introduced to three characters Benjamin ( The fox) , Little Misfortune ( The little girl) and the Narrator.
  2. It begins with the narrator speaking to the player about Miss Fortune foreshadowing death but Misfortune is able to hear the Narrator and names him Mr Voice. Miss Fortune and the Narrator end up making a deal, Miss Fortune would play his game and in exchange grant her eternal happiness.
  3. Throughout the game Miss Fortune travel far away from home to reach this eternal happiness for her mother whilst secretly being spied by Benjamin, who she has a crush on. During the journey you make various choices for Miss Fortune and see many supernatural events all while throwing glitter around.
  4. By the end, it’s revealed the Narrator is actually a demon named Morgo who was the cause of the missing children around the town, and Benjamin is the fox trying to save you.

Fun fact : Fran Bow and Little Misfortune come from the same universe !
