- Why am I delving deeper into this?
- I chose to go more into this since, as I previously mentioned, the magical spells and conditions were the main reason, I chose topic.
But…… what do I mean by rules, limitations and costs?
- What magic can and cannot do
- The cost of power; possibly looking at various sacrifices.
- Rules that every magical user tends to follow in shows and films.
| Limitations : | Rules : | Costs : |
| Magic is typically portrayed to have limitations to restrict / demonstrate the extent of power. It helps set up the rules for that world and prevents magic to be too overpowered. I looked into some to see how they explore it.. | Rules help the world feel more structured it also gives a better understanding of the magical world the the viewer. It could also help set the tone for the world. Usually, there are moral guidelines for magical rules that must be adhered to in order to prevent individuals in positions of authority from treating others unfairly. | Typically when a user uses magic it comes from a source like a stamina bar, this is so magical users aren’t too overpowered and having a price / cost will make using it more meaningful. For shows, it helps build plot and feel more satisfying for viewer when the character work for their victory. |

Puella Magi Madoka Magica
- Quick summary : A girl is granted a wish in exchange for a commitment to battling witches.
Why this anime?
- I chose this anime because I thought the wish system and general narrative to be very engaging. It appears to be a typical magical girl anime, but its’s more sinister and plays with multiple realities. I found the limitations of this anime really fascinating, as one of the girls becomes some type of deity by the end and even the overall different art style.
How does magical power / rules come into play?
- The way it works is teenagers, generally 14 years old being contacted by a powerful entity named ‘Kyubey’ the picture displayed on the left. In exchange for fighting witches, this cat promises to fulfil one wish.
- When watching this show, it started off extremely cryptic but as you continue you progressively see more of the horror side of this anime.

What’s unique about their limitation / rules and cost system?
- Loop : Make a wish ➜ Become a magical girl ➜ Fall into despair ➜ Becoming a witch ➜ death by another magical girl
- What’s interesting is that when Kyubey offers a wish, the cat states being able to grant any wish no matter how powerful or how crazy so there’s no limitations for it.
- As you watch more of the show, you see the real side of Kyubey. While you think this cute cat wouldn’t be deceiving. It was actually the main antagonist of the series, tricking innocent girls into becoming magical girls and while you think being a magical isn’t bad, you soon find out when you accept the deal of becoming a magical girl, you actually die and the soul gem given to you is your soul, if you grief too much your soul gem becomes a grief seed, which hatches you into a witch. So, when you agree to become a magical girl you are destined to die and become a witch. Kyubey doesn’t reveal this while it’s attempting to convince them to become a magical girl of course because it’s mission is to carry on generating new magical girls for eternity.
| Rules | Costs | Limitations |
| Make a wish to become a magical girl | Impending death and the promise to destroy witches | No limitations to the wish / Limitations to the users strength |
This is the protagonist of the anime also known as the strongest magical girl and had many different wishes in different timelines :

How could this influence and help me?
- After watching this anime, I found the overall plot twist and the art of it all interesting. I believe this was helpful because it gave me a better grasp about how limitations and rules could play a big part of making a good story. That even setting no limitations could be a massive possibility.
