Week 1 – Good Start Bad Start

Brainstorming

On Monday, we were introduced to our third-year curriculum and what to expect during our first and second semesters.

For our first half, we were given the task to notedown:

  • What makes us cry?
  • What makes us laugh?
  • What gets us excited?
  • What gets us angry?
  • What stimulates us intellectually?
  • What interests us?

This was to get us in the headspace for thinking about what we would be passionate about making, and as a result, brainstorm potential themes. We needed to have at least four by the end of the week.

Picking Apart Ideas

During the second half of our Monday session, we worked in pairs using the lotus blossom technique to break down a few of our ideas from the mind maps. This was to get us thinking more abstractly as well as narrow down the topics into a more focused concept.

We chose the topics: memories, noise, provocative media, and overwhelm to build upon. Through association, we were able to get from the topic of overwhelm to disassociation. Using this technique was a helpful starting point, as although I already had some topics in mind, it gave me a direction and ways to refine a theme that would otherwise be quite broad.
