My Presention
We started Monday off with our presentations on the topics we’ve been researching for the past week. We were given an 8 minute window to share all 4 of our ideas.
My presentation was about:
- Tarot & Astrology
- Childhood
- Hanahaki Disease
- 19th-Century Opera Ballet
I discussed the very basics of tarot and some parts of the deck, such as Major & Minor Arcana (with three examples of Major Arcana cards). I used the Knight of Wands card from two different decks to show how they can be interpreted slightly differently. The Knight of Wands card represents impulse, adventure, passion, and bold action. If the card were pulled when asking a question about someone’s traits/energy, this would mean they are a go-getter and feel confident in pursuing their goals. The different visuals on the cards can also add new meaning (e.g. the addition of the Labrador in the first card symbolises loyalty, so that person could be loyal or committed to something).
I compared the two most commonly used types of astrology: Western and Vedic. Both types use the 12 zodiac signs (e.g. Virgo, Pisces, etc.) but have differences, such as what they use to calculate and the core philosophies.
For the childhood topic, there were a lot of branches that I wanted to explore: diaries, dysfunctional family dynamics and emotional neglect. How might these have been documented in a diary? And how would these manifest in adult life?
I included fanart as well as an excerpt from an AO3 fanfiction, as the hanahaki disease trope is quite popular in fanwork.
Feedback
I felt my presentation went quite well since I was already interested in these topics and was knowledgeable on them – especially the basics of tarot so I wasn’t too worried that I’d forget what to say. We used nodenogg.in to record our feedback from the rest of the class and some of them were quite helpful for additonal research.
