Week 5 – Chosen Theme Presentation

My Presentation

This week, we chose one of our topics to further research and present to the class. We expanded on what we had from our last presentation; sharing key information that would get the rest of the class thinking about potential game ideas and feedback for our themes.

I expanded on the topic of Major Arcana from my last presentation and what these 22 cards actually represent. Breaking down the cards into their 3 phases, I thought it could inspire ideas for a more narrative driven game, as these archetypes all have their own attributes and follow a storyline.

I also expanded on the Minor Arcana. The 56 cards are categorized into 4 suits: wands, cups, swords, and pentacles, which each suit representing different areas of daily life as well as corresponding with an element. I thought this would be interesting if you were to possibly think about these suits as factions in a society.

Each suit has a set of court cards: Page, Knight, Queen, and King. These cards have their own attributes, which could make for interesting characters.

In a reading, specifically love readings, soul ties/contracts are represented by different cards. This could add another element to a narrative.

Feedback

Just like our last presentations, we used nodenogg.in to share and receive feedback on our themes. Much of my feedback was really helpful, and many of the game ideas leaned more towards narrative, open-world or some form of gambling game. The deck is rich in archetypes and characters, which I think inspired a lot of people. The idea in which you play from a scammer’s POV was an interesting take that I hadn’t really thought about previously. It subverted the stereotypical ideas that usually come to mind when you say a game about tarot.
