Although not a comprehensive list of all the potential character designs, this post will include experimentation with art styles as well as a few character concepts.
The Fool
Here are a few sketches for potential designs for the protagonist. Originally, the character looked slightly older, but I wanted the design to be cuter, hence the much younger-looking sketches at the bottom. I also chose to have the Fool character be a child, as children act more on impulse than adults. Much like the Fool, their lack of preconceived notions allows them to move through the world with excitement and curiosity.
The Dog
As the player’s loyal companion throughout the game, I wanted the design to be cute as well. In traditional tarot, the dog in the Fool’s card represents the Fool’s instincts and subconscious mind, so I tried to match their colour palettes.
The dog is often identified as a Maltese terrier, with its white fur, short coat, and floppy ears.
