My inspiration for bookplates came from a series of recent artworks by a friend. She created many bookplates based on character impressions, and through browsing her social media, I was introduced to the concept of bookplates more concretely and systematically for the first time.
In addition, I previously played Library of Ruina, a game developed by Project Moon. In this game, one of the core narrative mechanisms involves turning people into “books” through combat, allowing the player to obtain and read their stories and lives.
A library is, by nature, a place filled with stories, and bookplates serve to connect books with their owners. Using bookplates to express the unique traits of a book’s owner or its place of belonging could become a particularly effective medium for storytelling.
